Over 100 feared dead in tsunami-hit Samoa

The tsunami death toll triggered by an 8.3 magnitude earthquake, which rocked Samoa and other Pacific islands, could reach 100, according to Red Cross and media reports.
Locals in Samoa have been told more than 100, and possibly "hundreds", may have been killed in the tsunami that hit the island this morning.
The confirmed death toll from the South Pacific earthquake and tsunami is at 36, with a minimum of 14 reported dead in both Samoa and American Samoa; The Sydney Morning Herald quoted reports, as saying.
But media in Samoa says the tsunami had devastated villages on the south of the island, and the number of people feared dead was far higher.
"It's like nothing we've ever experienced before," said Tasi Uesele, who in the Samoan capital, Apia.
"There's unconfirmed reports that are on TV right now that up to 100 people, including tourists, that are missing right now because of the waves that hit hard," she said.
A large number of the dead were believed to be from Lalomanu, a village on Samoa's southeastern tip popular with tourists, she said.
"We don't know if the 100 are from people swept out [to sea] or from when tremors shook and people were buried in their own houses. We just saw some footage of dead people being brought into the hospital ... we've only seen about three or four dead and a lot of people wounded," Tasi added.
A Samoan schoolgirl whose village was evacuated to the mountains around Apia also said local radio reported hundreds of people were killed when the tsunami hit Lalomanu.
"They're still looking for other people, missing people, they said hundreds. There are no houses, clothes, and stuff is all everywhere," said Sulu Bentley, who lives in Leauvaa, 15 minutes from Apia.
Tasi said the first wave hit so quickly after the tremor that locals had little time to react.

Air India pilots call off strike, apologise to passengers

Air India pilots called off their five-day strike Wednesday following assurances from the civil aviation ministry that there would be no salary cuts.
'We have received official communication from civil aviation minister (Praful Patel) and he himself has assured that there would be no salary cuts. So we immediately call off the strike,' said Captain V.K. Bhalla, a senior executive pilot who was spearheading the strike.
'We have no reason to not trust the civil aviation minister. I am asking all the pilots to come back on work. We would now fully cooperate with the management. We also apologise to passengers for the inconvenience caused,' Bhalla added.
'Captain V.K. Bhalla is not above the government of India,' he said at a crowded press conference.
The strike had begun Saturday with 180 Air India pilots going on sick leave to protest the cut in their PLI (productivity linked incentives).
Till Tuesday, day four of the strike, 100 flights had been cancelled. On Wednesday morning, 28 flights, including two international, had been cancelled.
Technical engineers and Mumbai-based pilots had also joined the strike, which was being led by the Delhi faction of the senior executive pilots.
The pilots had been protesting the cut in their wages, but the airline had maintained this was being done as it had reported losses of over Rs.7,200 crore since the last fiscal.
When asked about huge losses to Air India, Bhalla said the profitability of any airlines was directly related to fuel consumption. 'We will advise the management on how to prevent wasteful expenditure,' he said. Giving an instance, he said if Air India was sponsoring a golf tournament the pilots would suggest that it should not do so.

Death of IIM-A student not due to swine flu: Health officials

A student from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A) who died today morning has tested negative for swine flu, state health officials said.

"Sample taken from Nikhil Kamat, the IIM-A student who died in the Sterling hospital today morning has turned out to be negative for swine flu infection," principal secretary health Ravi Saxena said.

Earlier, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation health authorities, as a precautionary measure, had sent the student's samples for medical examination to B J Medical College for swine flu confirmatory test.

Kamat was a first year Post Graduate Programme (PGP) student from Chennai and suffering from a rare blood disorder Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), IIM-A sources said.

The student was first admitted to a private hospital and when his condition began to deteriorate he was shifted to another private hospital where he died today, they said.

TTP causes formation of blood clots in small blood vessels throughout the body. These blood clots can cause serious problems if they block blood vessels and limit blood flow to the brain, kidneys, or heart leading to multiple organ failure.

India to Release Current Account Data on Sept. 30

India’s central bank will detail the nation’s current account data for the quarter ended June on Sept. 30.
The broad measure of trade and investment flows showed a surplus for the first time in two years in the three months through March as software exports and remittances helped boost capital inflows.
The surplus was $4.75 billion in the quarter ended March, compared with a record deficit of $13 billion in the preceding three months. India last had a current-account surplus of $4.25 billion in the January-March period of 2007.
Indian government offices, banks, bond and currency markets, the central bank and stock exchanges are closed today for the Hindu festival of Dussehra. They will also remain shut on Oct. 2 for the birth anniversary of Mohandas K. Gandhi, who helped the nation gain independence from the British in 1947.
The Bombay Stock Exchange’s Sensitive Index, or Sensex, declined 0.3 percent last week on concern a delay in the global economic recovery will hurt earnings at local companies. Hindalco Industries Ltd., the biggest aluminum producer, and Infosys Technologies Ltd., the second-biggest software service provider, were among the biggest losers.
Bonds, Currency
India’s bonds fell, pushing yields to the highest in almost two weeks, as investors sold before a debt auction. The benchmark 10-year notes ended a two-week advance as the government sold more securities than it previously planned for the second consecutive time on Sept. 25 after an auction was canceled in August.
The yield on the 6.90 percent note due July 2019 rose seven basis points last week to 7.17 percent, according to the central bank’s trading system. A basis point is 0.01 percentage point.
The rupee climbed for a third week as overseas funds added to their holdings of local assets to benefit from growth in Asia’s No. 3 economy. The rupee reached its strongest level in more than a month after the stock marketregulator showed global funds bought more equities than they sold for a 13th straight day through Sept. 24, the longest streak since Aug. 4.
The currency gained 0.3 percent last week to 47.9875 per dollar, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Air India mulls 15-day flight suspension

India's state-owned Air India is considering a suspension of its operations for about 15 days after the management's talks with pilots failed to break a deadlock over pay issues
At least 40 Air India flights were canceled Monday after scores of pilots reported sick, according to The Economic Times. The pilots had gone on strike to protest the loss-making airline's decision to slash performance-linked incentives paid to employees by 25% to 50%.
Air India, which had accumulated losses of 75 billion rupees ($1.56 billion) as of March 2009, has asked for a 50 billion rupee equity-infusion from the government to be able to continue its operations

multiple personality disorder symptoms, split personality, schizophrenia, dissociative identity disorder, borderline personality disorder

Multiple Personality Disorder or Dissociative Identity disorder
Dissociative Identity disorder is a common psychological disorder in which a person shows attributes of many people, that is there are multiple and distinct personalities that exist within one person. These personalities react and act with the surroundings. The whole phenomenon is like watching a movie, relating to the character of the movie and going through all the situations that he goes through but at no point of time do we forget our own identity but then there are some people who fail to do that. They assume the identity of the other character and thus release their suppressed feelings and emotions in this kind of a mitigated way.

One personality is absolutely oblivious of the other one’s presence but both the personalities take control of the individual at regular intervals but then there is no shared memory. The most interesting characteristic of this disorder is that the alternate personality is an individual in it and has its own history and array of experiences. Gender and voice also changes, at times the alternate personality shows features like weak eyesight. Isn’t it surprising that two personalities exist in the same body and manipulate the body as per their requirements and all this is facilitated by the power of human brain? Initially this disorder was also known as "Multiple Personality disorder".

Signs and Symptoms

Some of the signs and symptoms that show in case of Dissociative Identity Disorder are similar to that of any physical disorder like the following:

  • Mood swings
  • Abnormal fears
  • Suicidal tendencies
  • Depression
  • Sleep Disorders
  • Alcohol
  • Partial loss of memory like forgetting certain incidents and occurrences
The other symptoms are a sense of being detached from oneself which is also called depersonalization and there is another phenomenon called derealization that these patients go through wherein the perception of things happening around us weakens and seems to blur.

India v Australia declared no result

The ICC Champions Trophy match between India and Australia was declared as a no result, after the match was abandoned due to rain. Australiahad won the toss and elected to bat first, and they were on 234-4 from 42.3 overs when the heavens opened.
This result means that Pakistan are now through to the Semi Finals, while India and Australia are both still in with a chance of reaching the last four. If Australia beat Pakistan in their final group game then they will be through to the Semi Finals.
India on the other hand must beat the West Indies by a considerable margin and hope that Pakistan can beat Australia. Australia have been playing some very good cricket in recent months, and just a week ago they defeated England 6-1 in the Natwest series.
Ricky Ponting's men are the Champions Trophy defending champions, they won the title back in 2006 when it was held in India, and on that occasion Australia managed to beat the West Indies in the final.
If Australia find their best form then they have every chance of upsetting the betting odds and defending their title.

Welcome to the new age Ravana dahan. Devotees all residents of Sharda Society near Dharnidhar Derasar have made the idol, which has been fixed with a special electronic circuit.

A resident Tejas Desai told TOI, "These are modern times and we wanted to depict modernity. Special firecrackers and electronic circuits have been used to achieve this. Ravana goes up in flames, Durga idols immersed on Dussehra

As thousands of onlookers cheered, the effigies of demon king Ravana were set ablaze amid a burst of fire crackers at many places across the national capital Monday evening to celebrate Dussehra, symbolising the victory of good over evil. The day also saw hundreds of idols of Goddess Durga being immersed in the Yamuna river as the Navaratri celebrations ended.
Thousands of people gathered at the Ram Lila Ground near the Red Fort here to watch the city’s oldest Ramlila event. It has been organised for over 150 years, with India’s erstwhile British rulers granting it permission in 1921.

Vice-president Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress party president Sonia Gandhi, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and other senior Congress leaders earlier witnessed the staged ritual fight between Lord Ram and Ravana at the ground.
Also present at the ground was Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal. The Congress president, wearing a maroon sari, waved to the thousands of people gathered to watch the event.
“It’s a once a year celebration and we don’t want to miss it,” said Shakti, en route to the venue where people from all walks of life were present.

Tortured in Pakistan, Hindu migrants want to stay in India

'We Hindus in Pakistan are being discriminated against, tortured and harassed,' complains Ram Lal, a 45-year-old migrant from Pakistan, one of the estimated 10,000 migrants from that country settled in and around here in the desert state of Rajasthan.
He came to Jodhpur with his family of five over six months ago when, he says, things started to worsen.
'I do not want to go back....being a Hindu, there are so many problems for you in Pakistan,' Ram Lala told IANS, adding that only one member of his family, his brother, now lives in Pakistan.
'In Pakistan we, being Hindus, are not allowed to eat in a restaurant or a dhaba and if allowed by chance, we are served food in different utensils which we have to clean ourselves after eating,' said Ram Lal, whose name was changed on request, as he feared for the safety of his brother.
Ram Lal, who used to work in a farm in Dilshakh near Hyderabad in Sindh province, said: 'Hindus were given a paltry remuneration in comparison to Muslims and we had no one to complain to'.
Imran Kumar, another Hindu refugee, adopted a Muslim name saying this was the best way to live peacefully in Pakistan. His father's name is Nemi Kumar.
'I come from a Hindu family. I did not change my religion, I only changed my name and it helped me to get admission in school easily,' said Imran, a man in his early 30s, adding that if you are a Hindu in Pakistan it is most likely that you will not get admission in educational institutions.
Lal and Kumar are not the only Pakistani refugees in Jodhpur. According to rough estimates by Seemant Lok Sangathan (SLS), a group working for refugees in Rajasthan, over 10,000 Hindu migrants from Pakistan are living in this city.
Over 5,300 of them were granted citizenship till 2005 and SLS says more than 5,000 others have now already applied for long term visa (LTV).
SLS president Hindu Singh Sodha said: 'The LTV number keeps on changing because whoever stays here for six months can apply for it to the union home ministry and according to our information, the displaced who have applied for LTV till date are around 5,000.'
'Religious persecution, discrimination and harassment of the Hindu minority are the main reasons behind people wanting to come to India. While the Pakistani government has discriminatory policies for the minority community members, they are also victims of rising fundamentalism in Pakistan,' Ranaram told IANS.

Gujarat ranks 6th in creating jobs in state-owned firms

Gujarat, which made the highest investment among states in public enterprises, is ranked sixth in terms of generating employment in these units, a survey says. Andhra Pradesh, which topped the list of 10 states for generating jobs in the State Level Public Enterprises (SLPEs), was the fourth-largest investor.
According to a National Survey on SLPEs, investments and employment do not go hand-in-hand in SLPEs. Andhra Pradesh generated jobs for 2,650,81 people as on March 31, 2007, in its SLPEs, while its investment in these units was Rs 32,993 crore, far less than Rs 46,169 crore invested in the Gujarat units.
Likewise, Tamil Nadu, which ranked ninth in terms of investments in SLPEs, turned out to be the second-best employer in terms of jobs in the SLPEs, according to the survey. In all, 837 SLPEs with a total investment of Rs 3,33,441 crore generated an aggregate employment for 18 lakh employees as per the data collated up to March 2007.
The SLPEs have been operating in areas such as mining, public distribution/trading and marketing, warehousing, tourism, handicrafts and handloom development, forest and fisheries development, financial services and housing.

BlackBerry is world's fastest growing company: Fortune

BlackBerry-maker Research In Motion (RIM) tops Fortune magazine's list of the world's 100 fastest-growing companies.
It is the first time that Fortune has opened its list of the top 100 fastest growing companies to businesses from around the world.
Apple, which is BlackBerry makers' main rival in the global smart phone market, is way down the list at 39th spot.
Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Inc., which is the world's biggest fertiliser company, is another Canadian firm among the top 10 in the Fortune list.
Among the top 10 are also two companies from China -- Sohu.com and Shanda Interactive Entertainment.
Others in the top 10 are California-based Sigma Designs, Ebix of Atlanta, Texas-based DG Fastchannel, CF Industries of Illinois, Arena Resources of Oklahoma and Massachusetts-based Bruker Corp.
BlackBerry maker RIM currently controls 56 percent of the smart phone market in the US.
Based at Hamilton near Toronto, RIM has just reported net revenue of $3.42 billion for the first quarter of fiscal 2010 -- up 53 percent from the same period last year.
Defying market forecasts, it has posted a record quarterly profit of $643 million as against $482.5 million during the same period last year.
The wireless communication giant, which has currently about 12,000 employees on its rolls, has also extended its market from corporate types to common consumers.
Giving credit to them for this, Fortune magazine says RIM co-CEOs Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis are 'more than holding their own' against Apple head Steve Jobs.
Apple had mounted a huge challenge to the BlackBerry maker last year by launching its iphones.
However, Fortune warns RIM that competition is 'getting increasingly stiff' with changing consumer demands.
Currently, BlackBerry has a subscription base of about 29 million in about 150 countries.
At about $80, RIM shares are still almost half of the $150-peak they touched early last year.
To be eligible for the list, foreign companies should be traded on a US exchange and file quarterly reports. Fortune ranks the companies on the basis of three years of revenue and profit growth and total return.
