James Cameron criticises conversion of films to 3D

James Cameron has slammed the procedure employed by some filmmakers to convert films lensed in 2D to the 3D format.
According to Cameron, making a movie in 3D - like he filmed Avatar - ensures better quality over subsequent conversion.
Cameron said filmmakers "should have been pounding on the gates of the studios saying we want to make movies in 3D."
However, the Titanic director, 55, pointed out that the appetite for 3D films might soon dip.
"The problem is these decisions should be made by film-makers, they shouldn't be made by studios, because if it was up to studios they're going to sacrifice quality for lower cost," the BBC quoted Cameron, as saying.
Cameron has also disclosed plans to convert Titanic into 3D, but said he will take his time and not go with a "slapdash conversion".

The Phoonk 2 scare challenge

Director Ram Gopal Varma seems to have a lot of faith in Phoonk 2, to the extent that's he's ready to hand out a cash prize of Rs 5 lakhs to anyone brave enough to watch his latest.
The contest claims to award the winner if he/she dares to watch the movie all alone in a cinema hall. Phoonk makers claim the last man who tried watching the first movie didn't even last 30 minutes.
The challenge, however, ran into scandal when many claimed the first wasn't scary at all, with some even alleging the scare contest was rigged.
But the team behind Phoonk 2 refuses to back down, and have taken the second version of the challenge to a whole new level.
"For Phoonk 2, we are adopting a very scientific method. The contestant will be fitted with an ECG machine while Phoonk 2 plays. The machine will monitor his heartbeat and pulse rate and this will be shown live on a screen outside the theatre to both the media and all concerned," revealed a press release.

2012 Movie Review: Apocalyptic '2012' offers up efficiently awful doomsday

There are disaster movies and there are movies which are disasters. Somewhat surprisingly, "2012" is more the first than the latter.

True, it's a big, mindless, cheese ball compilation of clichés, special effects, breathtaking escapes, maddening coincidences and explosions, explosions, explosions.
Beyond that, it's probably the largest-scale snuff film ever made, offering audiences nonstop scene after scene in which thousands of human lives are lost. Tiny ant people fall from crumbling skyscrapers, run about panicked on freeways, stand helpless awaiting annihilation as tidal wave after tidal wave hits land.

Yep, that's entertainment. But the cold hard truth is, that is entertainment these days.

The top film so far this year is the similarly destructive "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen." Moral considerations and human suffering be damned, let's ride the roller coaster.

The ride here is appropriately harrowing. In "2012," apocalyptically minded writer-director Roland Emmerich ("Independence Day," "The Day After Tomorrow") finally gets to destroy virtually all of civilization.

This happens because extreme solar flares are heating up the Earth's core, causing continents to suddenly shift.

Once Emmerich establishes divorced dad John Cusack and a few other characters, he promptly starts his destructo machine, and for the next full hour mankind gets hammered as the Cusack clan manages a parade of near escapes.

To where? Why, to the secret group of gargantuan arks that have been prepared for this day, though only billionaires and celebrities need apply for seating.
Emmerich follows the familiar story arc here -- devastation, perseverance, hope, salvation -- and many of the scenes seem airlifted out of his previous films.

But "2012" actually flows better than anything he's made in a decade, predictable and reprehensible as it may be. This is fear-mongering, sentimental, horror show shtick, but it's also fairly competent, making "2012" a work of awful efficiency.

Producer Mukesh Bhatt
Release Date November 13, 2009
Ali Taha (Emraan Hashmi) and Sanjana (Soha Ali Khan) are two people with a history, on a flight back to Mumbai.
They land in Mumbai to witness the devastating Mumbai monsoon on 26th July 2005.
While they struggle to make it through the flooded streets of Mumbai, the past catches up with them – how they met and how it ended.
As the rain’s fury beats down on the city, Ali and Sanjana discover each other all over again.
Tum Mile Movie Review
Tum Mile: A predictable bore
Rating: 2 out of 5*
Starring: Emraan Hashmi, Soha Ali Khan, Sachin Khedekar and RJ Mantra
Director: Kunal Deshmukh
Ali Taha (Emraan) meets Sanjana (Soha) on board of their flight to Mumbai from Cape Town. Here on the film proceeds on and back and forth narrative revealing them being ex-lovers. Six years back then Ali was a art student and had lost his heart to the activist Sanjana. They both had progressed to a live in relationship in quick time as well. But monetary issues leading to ego clashes had broken their relationship apart. After arriving in Mumbai on the ill fated day of 26th July 2005, they go onto encounter the biggest floods in the history of Mumbai. The rest of the film is about the couple battling for their lives after being stuck in the rain and floods. In their struggle for survival, they learn more about each other and things which they had not known in all those years of being together.
Emraan is only getting better with each passing film and in here as well he is very impressive. Soha Ali Khan delivers her best performance till date going through a gamut of expressions with amazing ease. Amongst the rest cast the only one to leave a mark is debutant RJ Mantra. He is very good playing Emraan’s buddy.
Kunal Deshmukh’s shows technical department improvement after his debut film Jannat. His treatment of the love story though somewhat predictable is good as well. But we most often keep sensing that the flood situation things which appear more thrilling have completely deliberately taken a back seat with the flash back and romance between the lead pair taking more prominence. This all leads to the film being boring at many places. There was a recent news item that Mahesh Bhatt cut short the flood shots to give more importance to the romantic track. Well not a wise decision we may say. The stock footage of the floods and the computer graphics are a let down at many places but the one thing that doesn’t dissappoint is the film’s music. Pritam deserves full marks for his consistency in delivery great music which is already ruling the charts along with his score for last Friday’s release Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani. Camerawork by Prakash Kutty is very good. The effort gone in recreating the flood situation is commendable as well.
Tum Mile is more of a romantic film with the natural disaster backdrop added for effect. If you are going in expecting India’s first disaster movie then you will be in for a major disillusionment. So choose it at your own preference.
