Mumbai’s suburban train motormen begin hunger strike

More than 1,000 motormen of suburban trains on the Western and Central Railways today began their indefinite hunger strike agitation, while driving trains without having even a glass of water, to press for their long pending demands.

Devendrea Yadav, a union leader of WR, said more than 1,000 motormen went on hunger strike in Mumbai. Even water was not taken by them since 0600 hrs. He said 250 out of 400 motormen of WR were sitting on hunger strike at Churchgate while the remaining were running the trains.

Whereas on the CR, 400 out of 600 were sitting on hunger strike at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) while the others were running the trains.

Mr Yadav also said some motormen took ill at CST and Churchgate, and they were being treated by the doctors at railway station itself.

The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of WR, Nitin David, said the trains were running on time and there was no delay till noon. But, by the evening, the train services could be disrupted. However, the railway authorities have asked the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) to run extra buses across the city.

The CR spokesperson said the trains were running on time, but there could be problem later in the day. The motormen's demands include higher salaries and better working conditions among others.

mumbai monorail, monorail, monorail in mumbai,Mumbai Monorail Project | Mumbai Monorail Pictures | Monorail Test Drive

Mumbai Monorail Project takes off with a Test Drive of the Mumbai Monorail on 26th Jan 2010.
Mumbai’s first monorail test ride happened on 26th January 2010. The Test Drive of Mumbai’s Monorail was done in the presence of a number of technocrats, dignitaries and the chief minister. Malaysian born S Ponnadurai test ran the light blue rake of the monorail, which arrived in the city on January 13.
Engineers of Larsen & Toubro, along with experts from Scomi, and consultants from Louis Berger, were busy giving the 110-metre test run the final touches for the past few days. The ramp, near Aanik bus depot, stretches over 250 metres.

On 25th January, the barricaded Aanik road was full of motorists peeping out of their cars and taking pictures on their mobile phones of the first monorail, which began test runs late Monday evening. Once ready, the Mumbai Monorail 20-km track will have seven power substations. The Rs2,460-crore project will be completed by 2011.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan flagged it off at Wadala, the 108-metre test run on the 60th Republic Day.
“It is engineering marvel, only of its kind in India for the use of common man. It is going to help the people of Mumbai to commute. Around three lakh (3,00,000) people are expected to use it on a daily basis. I think it is one of the best thing that has happened to Mumbai,” Chavan said.
The 19.4-kilometers proposed route between Jacob Circle and Chembur is expected to be completed by 2011.
Monorail network is expected to give a much-needed boost to the public transport system of Mumbai, which is the most populous city of the country with and approximate population of 14 million people.
It will be an important supplement to the local trains and other road transportations.

Introducing the Economy AC-3 Class, with 3-tiered side berths

Remember rail coaches with three-tiered side berths? First tried in AC-3 and Sleeper coaches during Lalu Prasad’s term as Railway Minister and withdrawn after a public outcry, these coaches are set to return as the Railways launch a new class of AC travel — the Economy AC-3 — on its Duronto non-stop superfast trains.
The first of the Durontos, to be flagged off between Sealdah and Delhi on September 18, will have five Economy AC-3 coaches in addition to one AC-1, three AC-2 and four AC-3 coaches. This fully air-conditioned biweekly train is to cover the 1,454 km distance between Sealdah and Delhi in 16-and-half hours, one-and-half hours less than a Rajdhani on the same route.
The Railways are positioning the Economy AC-3 as a new AC Class, offering travel at fares lesser than the normal AC-3. The extra berths are being squeezed in to increase coach capacity from 64 to 72 berths — it will, however, reduce the comfort level. A ticket in Economy AC-3 may cost up to Rs 50 less than an AC-3 ticket.
