Govt okays further revision in pay for PSU officers
New Delhi, Mar 30 (PTI) About four lakh officers of central public sector enterprises will benefit from a government decision today giving them a further increase in salary and allowances, over and above the hikes announced last year. The decision to improve the salary structure of officers at board level and below, along with supervisory staff, was taken at the Cabinet meeting presided over by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The improved pay packages will also include increase in house rent allowance and retirement benefits. The decisions are based on the recommendations of the committee of ministers headed by Home Minister P Chidambaram, which went into the revised salary and allowances notified earlier in November last year by the government.PSU officers, particularly in the oil sector, forced the government to revisit their revised pay scales when they went on strike in January this year.Briefing reporters after the Cabinet meeting, Chidambaram said the revision in the pay structure would vary from company to company. New Delhi: More than 3 lakh employees of Central public sector enterprises will have something to cheer about before the elections as the UPA Government plans to consider on Monday a further increase in their emoluments — a 9.4% hike in their basic salary. The Election Commission, sources said, has given its go-ahead today.
The Cabinet is expected to take up the recommendations of a Group of Ministers to merge Dearness Allowance (DA) with the basic salary with DA being calculated at 78.2% of basic salary instead of 68.8% as per a Department of Public Enterprises notification on November 26, 2008.
The new pay will continue to be effective from January 1, 2007.
“We informed the EC that there was a financial implication. We have been advised that we could take it up for Cabinet approval but not publicise the approval,” a DPE source said.
The Cabinet will also be asked to approve the GOM’s recommendation allowing the issue of perks such as House Rent Allowance from November 26, 2008, instead of the day each ministry issues the new pay scales through a Presidential directive.
The other concession is that 30 per cent of basic pay and Dearness Allowance will be allowed towards superannuation benefits instead of just 30 percent of basic pay as announced in the DPE notification.
The new scales will be applicable to 1.2 lakh non-unionized supervisory staff and 2.58 lakh board-level officers in 216 operational CPSEs.

Oil prices to average $50 for rest of 2009
Political and Business Daily, New Delhi, March 26, 2009Dubai:
Oil prices are expected to average $50 per barrel for the remainder of the year based on Dated Brent as the benchmark, a Centre for Global Energy Studies (CGES) report has said. The reference case forecast takes into account the dire state of the world economy and expects global demand to fall by 900,000 barrels per day (bpd) in 2009. It also does not foresee any further compliance by OPEC countries with the quota reductions announced last December.Dated Brent was expected to have average $45 per, barrel in the first quarter, rising to $50.4 per barrel in the second and $51.8 -per barrel in the, third, then up to $53.4 per barrel in the last three months of this year."With demand set to fall dramatically, it is what happens to supply that will determine the price of oil," CGES said in its monthly, oil report. The report assumed that OPEC will keep its output relatively constant through the first quarter before leaking oil as prices marginally rise. But if OPEC fully complied with "the quotas, the report suggested that oil prices would rise much more rapidly throughout 2009, reaching an average of $74.3 per barrel in the final quarter, leaving an average of $57.4 per barrel for the year.

Ugadi is celebrated on a different day every year because the Hindu calendar is a lunisolar calendar. The Saka calendar begins with the month of Chaitra (March/April) and Ugadi marks the first day of the new year.
This is also first day of Marathi Calendar. This festival is supposed to mark the beginning of Vasant (spring). According to the Gregorian calendar this would fall sometime at the end of March and the beginning of April. According to the Brahma Purana, this is the day on which Brahma created the world after the deluge and time began to tick from this day forth. This is one of the 3 and a half days in the Indian Lunar calendar called "Sade-Teen Muhurt", whose every moment is considered auspicious in general to start a new activity.
While the people of Maharashtra use the term Gudhi Padwa for this festival and the Konkanis use Sanvsar Padvo (sanvsar derived from samvatsar meaning year) the people of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka term the same festival, observed on the same day, Ugadi. The Sindhi festival of Cheti Chand is celebrated same day

It is an appropriate neutral platform to provide an individual/business with the ability to store and publicize existing ways that people could get in touch with them.
It is a platform that is completely under the control of the .tel owner who then has the ability to publish his or her contact information easily and simply and with a frequency of their own choice, not at the whim of a service provider. This information can then be globally accessible by anyone at any time over any device in real-time.
By registering your .tel you're effectively staking your claim to your place in the cloud that is completely under your control, for as long as you want it to be. And the independence stretches to the communications channels that you want to publish under your .tel domain.
In India, domain name registrars like Net4India and Directi are inviting applications for registering the .tel domain, which is available for about Rs 3,000 for three years with a processing fee of Rs. 13,500. The processing fee goes to World Intellectual Property Organization. The individual registrations will open on March 24, which will be available for Rs. 999 for a year
Things to know about fashion weeks in India now.
Organised by the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI), the 12th edition of WIFW will be held during March 18-23 at Eros Intercontinental hotel.
Fashion Foundation of India's second DFW showing is scheduled for March 19-24 at the swish Emporio mall.
Unlike last year, when WIFW attracted a whopping 160 buyers, the presence of both domestic and international buyers this time around is predicted to be lower.
Compared to last year's spring-summer edition when it had 10 commercial partners and 79 designers, WIFW has managed to attract three new partners and established designers like Anamika Khanna, Raghavendra Rathore, Rocky S, Manish Malhotra, Priyadarshani Rao, Puja Nayyar and many more.
Both the events will also have additional Main Show Areas (MSAs).
While WIFW will have a third MSA at the pool side, DFW will have a second one inside the Emporio mall for select audiences.
"The third ramp is named the 'Talent Pool' where young designers will each showcase 10 garments. We've created a special ramp over the pool for this.
According to DFW head Sumeet Nair, the second MSA will be for 'Salon Shows'.
"Some designers expressed the desire to showcase an edited version comprising 20-30 garments of their pret (ready-to-wear) collection to only buyers and editors and therefore we decided to do salon shows. These shows will be in keeping with the international format of the event," Nair explained.
A normal fashion show can include up to 80 garments.
As in the past, the Bollywood quotient is expected to be high at both the events, with WIFW keeping its cards close to its chest, saying only that the celebrity factor could be evident at the shows of Mumbai-based designers Rocky S, Manish Malhotra and Shane and Falguni Peacock.
Though Sethi declined to reveal names, he said: "Fashion and glamour go hand in hand; so just wait and watch".
AS for DFW, there is talk of Bollywood beauties Deepika Padukone, Shilpa Shetty and Katrina Kaif sashaying down the ramp for designer Tarun Tahiliani.
This year, flower retail chain Ferns'N'Petals has been roped in as the decor and infrastructure partner for DFW.
As for WIFW, other than the title sponsor Wills Lifestyle, the other brands associated with the event this time around as associated sponsors are Fiama Di Wills, Hewlett Packard, Chivas, Audi, Elle, NDTV Good Times, Big FM, Intercontinental Eros, Yahoo, Kingfisher, Power Plate and FedEx.

the Indian research arms of the US-based IT giant IBM has developed a technology that will allow users to talk to the web and create voice sites using mobile phones.
"People will talk to the web and the web will respond. The research technology is analogous to the internet. Unlike personal computers it will work on mobile phones where people can simply create their voice sites," IBM India Research Laboratory Associate Director Manish Gupta told PTI.
For this technology, IBM has developed a new protocol -- Hyper Speech Transfer Protocol (HSTP) -- which is similar to the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP).
" India now has over 360 million cell phone subscribers. Last month we added 15 million," he said pointing out that the research technology targets ordinary mobile phone users, all of whom may not be literate.
The spoken web is a network of voice sites or interconnected voice and the response the company got in some pilot projects in Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat and the kind of innovations that people came up with were just mind-boggling, Mr. Gupta said.
