Kandahar

After Keertichakra and Kurukshetra, Mohanlal and Major Ravi have come out with another popular episode from the life and times of Major Mahadevan in their latest much hyped Kandahar. The film is partly inspired from the controversial Kandahar hijack that took India by storm in 1999.

Scripted and directed by Army officer turned filmmaker Major Ravi, Kandahar is mainly about the emotional conflicts in the minds of a few characters. Of course there are moments when every Indian would feel proud about being born in this great land, but the shaky script, ordinary action sequences and a faulty climax lets the film down.

Women Might Become More Fertile In 40s

The trend for having children after 40s could lead to women becoming more fertile only after 40s as suggested by researchers at a British university.
As many women wait until they are older to give birth, only those with longer lasting fertility genes will be successful. That means the average length of fertility will grow as their genes will be passed on to their children.
The study from the University of Sheffield shows that previously women would marry early and if widowed were too old to remarry thus favouring early childbirth in women.
But today's reluctance to settle down and reproduce until later in life could lead to fertility beginning to favour older women.
The scientists studied marriage patterns to trace the survival and marriage histories of 1,591 women.

Red Onion May Be Good For Heart

The commonly used spice item called red onion can help prevent heart disease, a new study has said.According to the researchers at the Chinese University in Hong Kong, red onion helps remove harmful cholesterol from the body which is responsible for heart attacks and strokes.

However, the ingredients in red onion retains the body's good cholesterol that protects against heart disease, the researchers said.
Lead researcher Zhen Yu Chen said, "Despite extensive research on onions, little is known of how their consumption interacts with human genes and proteins involved in cholesterol metabolism within the body."
He also said, "Our study was therefore undertaken to characterise the interaction of onions with enzymes in an attempt to explore the underlying cholesterol-lowering mechanism.”
"This study is the first of its kind to investigate the interaction of red onions with biological functions," he added.

B-Vitamins Kick Depression: Study

A new study has shown that people who have suffered a stroke and who regularly take vitamins are less likely to develop depression in their lifetime.
The study was undertaken by a group of researchers led by University of Western Australia.
The researchers said this was the first time they had been able to found a clear reason for the depressive symptoms after a stroke.
"Previous work had suggested that certain vitamins could have a role in preventing depression. However, we found that the stroke survivors who took daily folic acid, vitamin B6 and B12 were half as likely to become depressed,” a researcher said.
"This is an important finding, as depression is common in stroke survivors - one in three stroke sufferers is affected. We were hoping to find a way to prevent unnecessary suffering and the onset of depression,” they added.
"These results open access to a safe, effective and affordable way to manage their risk of depression after stroke," said lead researcher Professor Osvaldo Almeida.

Silver yields better returns than gold; prices may not fall

Precious metals have had a good year in the wake of lingering uncertainty over the longevity of economic recovery. While the emerging markets, notably India, China and Brazil, recovered rapidly from the economic slowdown, fears of a double-dip recession hung over most developed countries for much of the year.

The worries have receded in the US following the second round of quantitative easing–the decision by Federal Reserve to drive down interest rates by buying bonds—and extension of Bush tax cuts resulting in most economists upping growth estimates to 4-4.5% in 2011. But much of Europe and Japan remain mired in uncertainty, and even in the US, fears of inflation stoked by the expansion in money supply have caused some to turn to precious metals, particularly gold.

IT looks ahead to high growth

It's been a happy 2010 for the tech industry. It ushered in glimpses of recovery , while the second half of the year brought in growth, hiring and resilience, pumping in a sense of confidence back to the markets which were shattered by the global economic meltdown.

The highlight was the revival and the resilience it showed. IT companies posted good numbers clearly signalling that the risk of a double dip recession emerging and disrupting growth are now behind us. Besides, hiring plans and increments were back on board, demonstrating the feel good in the sector. So while 2010 was characterized by restructuring , consolidation, pragmatic learning and smart budgeting , 2011 will continue to build on that and move ahead, say industry experts. "The outlook for 2011 is positive and promising and innovation would be the key going forward," they said.

You may wonder how skipping the breakfast affects weight loss and you might think if we don’t eat food, then body will use the stored fat in the body and it will lead to weight loss but unfortunately that is not how our body functions. Breakfast has got the name from the fact that it breaks the longest fast our body goes in a day i.e. from dinner to next day meal.

Benefits of eating breakfast

By eating breakfast regularly, we can avoid heart attacks and strokes at first place. Platelets, the body’s blood clotting cells, become “stickier” in the morning before breakfast. This increases the tendency for a blood clot to form during the morning hours. If such a clot occurs in a heart blood vessel, a heart attack can result. As expected from this physiology, most heart attacks occur between 7 AM and 12 noon. Eating breakfast can help the platelets to become less sticky and thus decrease the risk of morning heart attacks.

However, soon after the September Ayodhya verdict, Bhagwat was in favour of the verdict saying, "We should not take it as a victory or defeat. This is the opportunity for us to show our unity as a country."

Government Steps In To Check Onion Price

With onion price rocketing and ending up at Rs 85 per kilo on Tuesday, the central Government had to step forward willing for some supportive action against the price rise. On Wednesday as a measure to curb price rise, Centre has said that customs duty on imports of the commodity was brought down to zero to 5 percent.

While talking to reporters, Finance secretary was quoted as saying "The customs duty on onions has been brought down to zero."

In order to check illegal hoarding the authorities have conducted raids in Delhi’s Azadpur and Ghaziabad wholesale markets.

The government had to take such a step as onion prices was soaring high touching the 80 mark. It was found that there was a hike in the onion price after excessive rain perished the crops in Gujarat, Maharashtra, and a few other southern states which are the key producers of onion in the country. But from Rs35 -40 it rose to Rs80 when the marketers made wrong use of the occasion for illegal hoarding, leading to a vast scale of onion deficit in the retail market.

Montek Questions Government's Mining Policy

According to Ahluwalia, if the coal- bearing area remained out of the mining boundaries, it can tarnish the infrastructure based growth of the country. Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Planning Commission Deputy Chairman was questioning the policies set by the Ministry of Environment and Forests.

The Environment Ministry’s declaration of half the coal bearing forest mines in about nine coal fields as no mining zones or “no-go” areas has also annoyed the Coal Ministry as well. As per the Ministry, a shortage of 500million tonne coal should be expected in the next few years.

As a matter of fact, some coal blocks that were allotted to companies like Hindustan Zinc, Ultra Tech and Essar apart from some allotted to the ultra-mega projects, fall in the no-mining zones.

Poverty

Poverty in India is a very real and very complex issue. In 2000 it was estimated that 26% of India’s population was living below their national poverty line. While this is an improvement from the 1950’s figure of over 50% living in poverty, there are still well over 250 million people for whom poverty is a way of life in India.

Children in particular are detrimentally affected by poverty. For those affected by poverty, problems such as malnutrition, child labour and high mortality rates are very real issues faced daily. Although India contains fewer than 20% of the world child population, more than 40% of the world’s malnourished children are found there. Girls are more often negatively affected than boys as gender inequality is also a very real fact of life in India.

The Film Federation of India , the mother body of all film associations, has "advised members of the film federation to not employ the services" of the iconic writer. The decision was taken yesterday morning in Chennai by its newly elected president, T.P. Agrawal.

When contacted Agrawal put it mildly, saying, "Yes, it is true. We have advised members of the film federation to ban Mr Javed Akhtar till the time that this entire copyrights issue is sorted. Our whole point is that the producer is the one who takes the entire risk.

Oil near to 2-yr high on cold, risk appetite

Oil hovered around its highest levels in more than two years on Friday, supported by cold weather across the globe, appetite for risk assets and no signals from OPEC it was prepared to arrest the rally.

Future ready homes: New age customer is on the lookout for smart-home network solutions

Today, home automation is no longer a futuristic fantasy and just confined to the affluent class but a reality that is being associated with mainstream design as well and is slowly becoming a part of everyday life. Home owners from different social strata have begun seriously contemplating the adoption of technology to ensure comfort, convenience and personal security.

Home Automation allows users to create their own living scenarios, to be set according to their own preferences: cinema ambience or an evening with friends, subdued lighting with automatic closing of curtains and adjustment of the thermostat...Imagination is the only limit. The system becomes the home's brain, allowing the user to create various living scenarios by controlling the lighting, the air conditioning, the television, the Hi Fi and all of this by a simple press. Listening to your favourite FM station, downloading music and other files through an IP gateway have never been easier. Add to that the possibility of controlling all these remotely through a WAP enabled mobile or your laptop.

By midsize, I do not mean $200-300 million deals, but it is kind of between mid and large, which is between $500 million and $2-3 billion deals - you will see many of them.

India must overcome barriers to sustain double-digit growth: FM

The government today exuded confidence that economic growth in the current and the next quarter will be as encouraging as 8.9 per cent recorded in the previous two quarters, but said India must tackle barriers to ensure double-digit level growth.
"It is expected the...two quarters would be as encouraging, if not better... we assume that we will be able to reach 8.5-8.7 per cent of GDP growth this year and perhaps next year will be able to reach a higher level," Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said at the annual general meeting of the PHD Chamber.
"It (double digit growth) must be on a sustainable basis and for that we shall have to ensure that the challenges that we are facing today, one on the price front, another on fiscal consolidation and third certain developments which are taking place (internationally)," he said.

However, the country will have to tackle host of national and international problems to register double-digit growth on a sustainable basis, he said.

2010 rings in reforms for fertiliser sector

Fertiliser sector witnessed a major reform in 2010 with the government deciding to subsidise the farm input based on the nutrient content instead of individual products like DAP and potash.

The move is expected to result in a huge change in agricultural practices in the country, as farmers will switch to farm inputs according to the need of their soil, in sharp contrast to the excessive use of certain fertilisers earlier because of the subsidies given by the government
However, according to FAI, there are certain lacunae in the NPS-III scheme, including non-recognition and non-updating of genuine production costs, delays in notification and disbursement of subsidies and non-reimbursement of a number of taxes and duties that companies are legally bound to pay.
"These resulted in large under-recoveries to urea units, not allowing even a few efficient and low-cost urea producers to earn responsible margins," it said.

Corruption

Corruption is both a major cause and a result of poverty around the world. It occurs at all levels of society, from local and national governments, civil society, judiciary functions, large and small businesses, military and other services and so on. Corruption affects the poorest the most, whether in rich or poor nations.

The issue of corruption is very much inter-related with other issues. At a global level, the “international” (Washington Consensus-influenced) economic system that has shaped the current form of globalization in the past decades requires further scrutiny for it has also created conditions whereby corruption can flourish and exacerbate the conditions of people around the world who already have little say about their own destiny.

GLOBAL FINANCIAL CRISIS

The extent of this problem has been so severe that some of the world’s largest financial institutions have collapsed. Others have been bought out by their competition at low prices and in other cases, the governments of the wealthiest nations in the world have resorted to extensive bail-out and rescue packages for the remaining large banks and financial institutions.

Some of the bail-outs have also led to charges of hypocrisy due to the apparent socializing of the costs while privatizing the profits. Furthermore, the institutions being rescued are typically the ones got the world into this trouble in the first place. For smaller businesses and poorer people, such options for bail out and rescue are rarely available when they find themselves in crisis. There is the argument that when the larger banks show signs of crisis, it is not just the wealthy that will suffer, but potentially everyone because of the ripple effect that problems at the top could have throughout the entire economy.

On the whole, every movie buff has humungous expectations from TEES MAAR KHAN since it’s already very high on hype. Firstly, fulfilling colossal expectations is an arduous task and over-hyping makes the task even more complex. TEES MAAR KHAN is more of a tribute to old-school Hindi cinema, with a fabulous first half and a strictly average second half. The Christmas weekend and vacations across the globe will ensure a record start in its opening weekend. If only its content was powerful enough, it would’ve truly been a tees maar entertainer!

Toonpur Ka Superhero Pre-release Review

India’s first live action-3D animation combination feature film, ‘Toonpur Ka Superhero’ is directed by debutant Kireet Khurana who has also scripted the story and screenplay of the movie. The movie is being presented by two banners, Eros International and Big Screen Entertainment, and is produced by Kumar Mangat. The music score has been given by non other than Anu Malik while the lyrics are penned by Munna Dhiman of ‘U Me Aur Hum’ fame.
The film which is being billed as India’s first animation feature does actually live up to its reputation. For not only is the animation artistic and classy, a living breathing Ajay Devgn too manages to be in perfect sync with the paper and pen characters. His adventures in Toon land with his cartoon friends — Bolly, Big Ben and the rest — turn out to have more power and punch than his exploits in the real world. Of course, he doesn’t spend too much time on terra firma, with his wife ( Kajol) and kids, since he is kidnapped and transferred to the subterranean world, peopled by his son’s favourite cartoon characters. But the kidnapping works out better.
