Users dump CDs, move to digital music

With an increase in the availability of licensed music, an overwhelming number of music lovers in India are opting to download music to their devices (computer, mobile phones and music players, among other gadgets) instead of buying music CDs.

Users like Shefali A Rastogi, a Pune-based homemaker, do not remember when they had last bought a music CD. “It’s tough to recollect my last CD because I have been downloading everything from the music company’s website or purchasing songs on my mobile from my telecom operator or sometimes an app store.”

Rastogi says she can spend up to Rs 500 for purchasing digital music every month. “There are hundreds of websites that offer music tracks and albums, streaming services, free-to-use sites, internet radio, subscription models and online video channels. So, why should I buy music CDs?”

Students of two-year MTech course with the city-based Central Institute of Plastic Engineering and Technology (CIPET), who had taken admission in the course in 2009, have appeared in only the 1st semester exam so far.

The students alleged inordinate delay in conducting examination by the Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT) is going to spoil their career. "If all examinations would have been conducted in the right time, we would have completed the course in 2011. But unfortunately, due to the negligence of BPUT authorities we have only completed the 1st semester in the past two years. Our career is at stake," said an MTech student in plastic engineering.

Heavy rains hits Kolkata

The city recorded 25 mm rainfall since last night till 10 am today.

The State government had yesterday formed a committee to oversee and strengthen the disaster management system in the State. The decision came after 45 fishing trawlers went missing in Kakdwip area on Thursday due to bad weather. One fisherman was killed when a trawler capsized in the sea. The other trawlers were located later.

Oil companies hiked aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices by Rs 1,377 per kilolitre (kl), or 2.4 per cent, to Rs 57,843 per kl in Delhi with effect from midnight tonight, an official of Indian Oil Corp, the nation’s largest fuel retailer, said.

ATF price in Mumbai, home to nation’s busiest airport, was hiked by Rs 1,434 to Rs 58,601 per kl.
