Social justice a dynamic device to elevate poor: ex-CJI  


Bhubaneswar, Sep 13 (PTI) Terming social justice as the ''soul'' of Indian Constitution, former Chief Justice of India R C Lahoti today said it was a dynamic device to elevate the status of deprived section in the society and mitigate their plight. "Social justice is a dynamic device to mitigate the sufferings of the disadvantaged and deprived section of society and elevate them to the level of equality," he said, delivering the Justice Y V Chandrachud Memorial Lecture on ''Social Justice in Indian Constitution'' here at KIIT Law School.
"Social justice is the soul and conscience of our Constitution," he said. Asking people to work with determination and commitment to remove obstacles in access to social justice, Lahoti said one needed originality of thinking to make effective contribution to development of social justice jurisprudence.
"All good things which exist are the fruits of originality," he said adding that Justice Chandrachud had left indelible imprints of originality of thinking in delivering landmark judgements on social justice. Inaugurating the lecture, Orissa Governor M C Bhandare said social justice was meant for the good of society where every section, especially the weaker groups, enjoyed its rights and privileges.
