Soon, Tamiflu may be sold at local chemists

NEW DELHI: Retail sale of Tamiflu might be allowed from the end of next week.
The final call on allowing the only effective antiviral against H1N1 swine flu to be sold from specific chemists only against prescription will be taken by health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad at a meeting on Monday.

The meeting will be attended by drug controller general of India Surinder Singh, director general of ICMR Dr V M Katoch and health secretary Naresh Dayal.

A lengthy meeting chaired by Azad on Friday, specifically revolving around India’s stock of Tamiflu, how to make it more readily available and by when it should be sold in retail stores did not end in any formal decision of opening up restricted sale of the drug.

Once approved, six companies — Ranbaxy, Cipla, Metco, Hetero, Strides and Roche — would get government nod to sell the drug through pharmacies
