US Geological Survey sounds Tsunami alert for Indian Ocean

New Delhi, Sep. 2 (ANI): The US Geological Survey on Wednesday issued a tsunami alert for the Indian Ocean in the wake of a 7.4-magnitude earthquake striking Indonesia's Java island.

According to the USSGS, the quake struck less than 200 kilometres south of the capital Jakarta at a depth of 63 kilometres.

A powerful underwater earthquake shook southern Indonesia on Wednesday, damaging buildings near the epicentre and causing panicked office workers to run onto the streets.

There were no immediate reports of injuries.

A tsunami alert was issued, but revoked less than an hour later.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said the quake was powerful enough to cause a local tsunami, but there were no immediate reports of high waves.

Less than an hour later it said in a statement that "sea level readings indicate a significant tsunami was not generated" and retracted the alert. (ANI)
