Indian Auto-Parts Workers Go on Strike, Protesting Death

Thousands of Indian auto parts workers have gone on strike to protest the death of a colleague, threatening to cripple an industry that has become an engine for the economy.
D.L. Sachdev, national secretary of the All India Trade Union Congress, an organization affiliated with the Communist Party of India, said up to 90,000 workers went on strike Tuesday from 60 industrial units in Gurgaon, Haryana, located outside of the country's capital New Delhi.
However, auto executives and local police gave far smaller estimates, ranging from 2,000-4,000 protestors. Thousands of other workers may not have shown up for their factory shifts in sympathy for the strikers, they said. Indian television footage showed protestors armed with sticks fleeing police.
