BSNL Kerala Expands 3G Mobile Service Coverage in 2 More Districts

 

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) today expands its 3G Mobile and Data service coverage in 2 more Districts in the state of Kerala by launching much awaited 3G mobile services in the Kollam city, Punalur, Karunagappally (District-Kollam), Pathanamthitta and Sabrimala which is known as Headquarters of Pilgrimage (Disrtict Pathanamthitta) in the state.

BSNL offers new 3G GSM Prepaid connection at Rs.59 wherein subscriber can enjoy lowest Video, Voice and Data tariff after the First Recharge.The existing BSNL GSM mobile service subscribers  in Kerala can upgrade the present 2G/2.5G services connection to 3G/3.5G services connection by sending SMS M3G120 to 53733. In response to the activation request SMS, confirmation to activate 3G services will be asked. To confirm 3G Services Activation it is required to send again an SMS M3G120Y to 53733. Activation of 3G services will be intimated through SMS.The operator also accepts the online migration request through its website.

The BSNL’s 3G mobile service includes Video calling, High Speed Internet connectivity up to 3.1 mbps, Multimedia services such as sharing of digital photos and movies via wireless means including Live TV,Videos and Music downloads, Real-time multilayer gaming.

According to Mr S.M.Kalavathi, DGM BSNL (Kollam), at present the 3 G services are available in 32 areas which include Kollam city, Punalur and Karunagappally of Kollam disrtcit and the whole district will be covered within four months.

Recenlty BSNL wrapped more than 300 cities with its 3G mobile and Broadband Data service Network in various telcom circles and enrolled more than 7.50 Lakh 3G subscribers. Now the operator also geared up covering all the district headquarters and major towns across India. BSNL is the only service provider to procure the license to operate 3G services in India except Mumbai and Delhi region.

Pakistan government today presented evidence before an anti-terrorism court against LeT operations chief Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi and six other suspects for their involvement in the Mumbai attacks.

The government's team of prosecutors presented evidence against the accused in the court of Judge Malik Muhammad Akram Awan in Rawalpindi, sources told PTI.

The details and nature of the evidence could not immediately be ascertained.

"Following the presentation of evidence, the judge adjourned the matter till February 13," said Shahbaz Rajput, a lawyer for some of the accused.

Defence lawyers had boycotted the last hearing on January 23 in protest against the failure of authorities to provide them security and facilitate their meetings with their clients at Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail in line with an order of the Lahore High Court.

Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan''s name in the list of Padma Shri awardees may have raised some eyebrows but the star says that he deserves the honour and will try his best to live up to it. "If you look at the awardees over the last couple of years, all of them have not exactly invented a nuclear bomb," the actor told a news channel.

Saif''s being named a Padma Shri had surprised many and sparked protests from the Bishnoi community due to the pending court case against him and Salman Khan for killing two black bucks. The 39-year-old star said that he is "conscious" that there are many more people who deserved it more than him.

"I do agree that there will be a few raised eyebrows because I am relatively younger and perhaps there are more deserving people out there," said the actor. However, his latest stance is slightly different from his previous statement where he had said that he felt "undeserving" of the honour.

"Honestly speaking, I feel really humbled and undeserving on being awarded the Padma Shri. It isn''t something that I had asked for and since Government of India has done this for me, all I can do is to deliver my best and live up to it," Saif had said.

Another incident of drunk driving in Marine Lines, a motorcyclist was crushed to death and five policemen were injured when a woman driver lost control and rammed her car into a stationary traffic police car and two other vehicles.

Nooriya Haveliwala (27), a beautician by profession, lost control over her car and hit the police jeep and bike at Marine Drive in South Mumbai, police said.

The accident took place shortly before 1 am when the woman was speeding along the Marine Lines, a police official informed.

The 35-year-old motorcyclist, identified as Afzal Mukhmojiya, was rushed to the hospital after the accident. He was , however, declared dead on arrival.

Barack Obama cited the economic challenge of countries like India as the main reason the United States needed to look beyond its present recession and invest in its future.

This is the first time India has been mentioned as an economic challenge in a US State of the Union address. The last time India was cited was in 2002 — when George W Bush invoked it as an ally against terrorism. “How long should America put its future on hold?” the US President said, noting that countries like India, China and Germany were “not standing still.”

He used his warning of rising economic competition to argue the case for financial reforms, ensuring US innovation in clean energy, increasing exports and improving the educational system. 

(This is the first time India has been mentioned as an economic challenge in a US State of the Union address. The last time India was cited was in 2002 — when George W Bush invoked it as an ally against terrorism.)

“China is not waiting to revamp its economy. Germany is not waiting. India is not waiting,” Obama said. “They are putting more emphasis on math and science. They’re rebuilding their infrastructure. They’re making serious investments in clear energy because they want those jobs.” 

These nations were not playing for second place, Obama warned, adding: “Well, I do not accept second place for the United State.”

His speech was overwhelmingly about the economy and jobs. The opposition Republicans have inflicted major local electoral reverses on the Democrats in recent months. The killer issue: a stubborn 10 per cent unemployment rate.  “Jobs must be our number one focus in 2010,” Obama said. 

The US leader seemed to take a swipe at outsourcing too saying, “It is time to finally slash the tax breaks for companies that ship our jobs overseas.”

NASSCOM was quick to respond, saying that outsourcing was not the target. “This is about US companies operating in regions where they get tax benefits,” it said. Indian corporate tax rates are comparable to those in the US.

Though foreign policy was relegated to the end of the speech, Obama threw up some issues that will concern New Delhi.

First, he explicitly spoke of bringing back US troops from Afghanistan starting July next year. India sees any US withdrawal from Afghanistan — that may allow the Taliban to takeover — as inimical to its interests.

Second, Obama promised to pass a US climate change bill. This is likely to result in renewed pressure from the West on countries like India and China to fix carbon emission targets, a move they are presently resisting.

Finally, Obama again committed himself to launching a worldwide programme to secure nuclear materials worldwide.

Though this has yet to be fleshed out, India will watch to see if this policy will include finalizing the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty and the Fissile Materials Cutoff Treaty.

Google has launched software that will allow users to type words in phonetically in any of the 14 languages like Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu, using an English keyboard. The software called Google Transliteration IME (Input Method Editor) is a desktop application which can be accessed even when offline, according to Alootechie.

Google Transliteration service has already been available on the web in Gmail, Orkut, Blogger. "The IME transliteration technology is an innovation from Google India that furthers our corporate mission of making the world's information universally assessable and useful. We have extended this to several other international languages as well as we believe there is a huge global opportunity for this technology," Rahul Roy Chowdhury, Senior Product Manager, Google India, has said.

The application was conceived and developed in India at Google's Bangalore R&D Centre.

In the midst of current chill in Indo-Pak relations, a SAARC Home Ministers conference is scheduled next month in Islamabad to which P Chidambaram plans to go subject to Foreign Office's approval.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and External Affairs Minister S M Krishna will discuss the issue and if the External Affairs Ministry allows, the Home Minister will travel to Pakistan to attend the SAARC meeting, a highly placed source said.

The SAARC Interior/Home Ministers' conference is scheduled to be held from February 20 for three days in Islamabad. In case Chidambaram travels to Islamabad, it would be the first Ministerial visit to Pakistan since May, 2008 when the then External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee had gone for talks as part of composite dialogue. Things worsened after the Mumbai terror attack on November 26, 2008.

The third SAARC interior ministers' conference was postponed from November 24 and 27, 2009 at the request from Bangladesh because of parliamentary polls in that country.

The meeting will be attended by ministers from

Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka and is expected to discuss regional cooperation for dealing with the menace of terrorism, narcotics and organised crime. The first such meeting was held in Dhaka on 11 May 2006 followed at New Delhi on 25 October 2007.

Mumbai Monorail Project takes off with a Test Drive of the Mumbai Monorail on 26th Jan 2010.

Mumbai’s first monorail test ride happened on 26th January 2010. The Test Drive of Mumbai’s Monorail was done in the presence of a number of technocrats, dignitaries and the chief minister. Malaysian born S Ponnadurai test ran the light blue rake of the monorail, which arrived in the city on January 13.

Engineers of Larsen & Toubro, along with experts from Scomi, and consultants from Louis Berger, were busy giving the 110-metre test run the final touches for the past few days. The ramp, near Aanik bus depot, stretches over 250 metres.

On 25th January, the barricaded Aanik road was full of motorists peeping out of their cars and taking pictures on their mobile phones of the first monorail, which began test runs late Monday evening. Once ready, the Mumbai Monorail 20-km track will have seven power substations. The Rs2,460-crore project will be completed by 2011.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan flagged it off at Wadala, the 108-metre test run on the 60th Republic Day.

“It is engineering marvel, only of its kind in India for the use of common man. It is going to help the people of Mumbai to commute. Around three lakh (3,00,000) people are expected to use it on a daily basis. I think it is one of the best thing that has happened to Mumbai,” Chavan said.

The 19.4-kilometers proposed route between Jacob Circle and Chembur is expected to be completed by 2011.

Monorail network is expected to give a much-needed boost to the public transport system of Mumbai, which is the most populous city of the country with and approximate population of 14 million people.

It will be an important supplement to the local trains and other road transportations.

The Commonwealth Games Federation has once again trapped in controversy, but this time not because of delay in preparations. This time it is because of a distorted India map that was put on its website.

On the official website www.thecgf.com the map of India shows some of the areas of Jammu and Kashmir and Gujarat as Pakistan parts. The 2010 Commonwealth Games organizers have raised the issue on Tuesday with the CGF officials.

Lalit Bhanot, the secretary of the Organising Committee said, “We have noticed it and told CGF officials about it. They have promised to revert back to us on the issue.”

He also added, “They would definitely correct it. We were told that they would talk to the people who maintain the site and get back to us.”

The official website of Commonwealth Games is owned and operated by Commonwealth Games Federation and it if responsible for overall function of Games around the world.

This grave mistake of the federation comes at the time when India is celebrating its 61st Republic Day.

Earlier the Commonwealth Games was always in controversies due to tardy preparation of infrastructure.

In yet another ceasefire violation, Pakistani troops today opened fire at Kanachak sub-sector of Jammu district and the BSF retaliated leading to a heavy exchange of fire between the two sides.

The ceasefire violation came as the country celebrated Republic Day.

The BSF also foiled infiltration bids by militants in the area.

The cross border firing started around 0200 hours even as a group of militants entered the Ulfa Machail border outpost along the International Border and were challenged by a BSF patrolling party, a senior BSF officer said.

The firing between forces from across the border and BSF continued till 0500 hours, he said.

The firing again erupted after a break and was continuing intermittently when reports last came in from the area, he said.

Mobile services across Jammu and Kashmir were jammed Tuesday with virtually no connectivity in the state, which is on high alert following terror threats on Republic Day.

All mobile networks stopped working Tuesday morning. There was no signal on mobile phones of private service providers, including Airtel, Vodafone, Tata Indicom and Aircel.

BSNL phones did have signal but could not connect to other phones. There was also no way of reaching service providers to know why there was no signal.

Officials said services had been jammed following inputs that the militants might use mobile phones to trigger explosive devices or pass on directions on phone.

Mars can be spotted closest, biggest and brightest on January 27 from Earth and the ''Mars Opposition'' would be on January 30, an official of Planetary Society of India said here today. During opposition, Mars and Sun are on directly opposite sides of Earth and Mars will be visible all through the night and it would be brightest beginning from January 27 till the end of March, Planetary Society''s general secretary N Raghunandan Kumar said.

"A planet is at opposition when it is directly opposite the Sun from our viewpoint on Earth. On January 30, Sun-Earth-Mars would be in opposition to each other from our perspective and the result is that the object (Mars) will be fully illuminated by the Sun and appears disk-like," Kumar explained.

Mars would be brighter than every star in the sky except the brightest star Sirius, he said adding "it is the perfect opportunity to watch and locate Mars with naked eye." Mars would appear as warm yellow gold with a hint of red star like object for naked eye.

However, if one can see through telescope they can appreciate ice caps in the Northern tip of Mars, he said. During the oppositions that happen after every 26 months, Mars will be nearer to the Earth than at any other time.

The next ''Opposition of Mars'' will occur on March 3, 2012. Similarly, Moon will also look bigger, closest and brightest on January 30, Kumar said.

The Prime Minister's Office on Sunday apologised for the inclusion of the picture of a former Pakistani air chief in a full-page advertisement issued by the women and child development ministry and ordered an internal inquiry into the lapse.

"The Prime Minister's Office has noted with regret the inclusion of a foreign national's photograph in a Government of India advertisement," the media adviser to the prime minister said in a statement.

"While an internal enquiry has been instituted the PMO apologises to the public for this lapse," he added.

The advertisements issued by the government's Directorate of Advertising and Visual Publicity (DAVP) for the ministry on the occasion of National Girl Child Day had inexplicably included the photograph of former Air Chief Marshal Tanvir Ahmed, who was Pakistan's air chief 2006-2009, along with such national heroes as Kapil Dev, Virender Sehwag and Amjad Ali Khan.

With television channels playing it up, the government quickly ordered a probe into the faux pas.

The Haryana Government has decided to provide a financial assistance to the tune of Rs 40 crore to sugar mills in the state during the current financial year to clear last year''s arrears of cane growers. A provision of Rs 80 crore to provide as financial assistance to the sugar mills for the next financial year.

Stating this here today, Cooperation Minister Paramvir Singh said the government had set up a cogen plant in Shahbad Sugarmill at a cost of Rs 90 crore which would generate 24 MW of power and out of this 16 MW power would be supplied to the State Grid. With this way, Shahbad Sugar mill would earn an additional sum of Rs 3.50 crore per month .

Singh said the state government has also approved modernisation and cogen plant at Panipat Sugar mills. He said that a cogen plant of 12 MW would be set up in Panipat Cooperative Sugar mills and it would helpful in meeting the growing demand of power.

Former captain Pargat Singh today launched a scathing attack on Suresh Kalmadi, calling him a "sports mafia" who is trying to become the Hockey India chief by hook or crook even though the IOA president rubbished the allegation.

Pargat, the Hockey Punjab secretary, also blasted Hockey India for deferring its February 7 election in the wake of a Rajasthan High Court order and alleged Kalmadi was "up to something sinister". He went to the extent of saying that the situation was better in the era of KPS Gill, who headed the erstwhile Indian Hockey Federation.

Kalmadi, on his part, rubbished the allegations, saying it was Pargat's "figment of imagination". "I'm not connected with Hockey India, I have the Commonwealth Games to look after and so I'm not getting into all those things," said Kalmadi.

Mirpur: Mahmudullah's grit was not enough as India skittled out Bangladesh for a modest total and then got off to a flying start to take early control of the second and final Test on Sunday. The opening day belonged to India as Ishant Sharma (4/66) and Zaheer Khan (3/62) decimated the Bangladesh top and middle order to reduce the hosts to 127 for seven.

Batting at number eight, Mahmudullah, however, refused to throw in the towel and showed exemplary grit, even though he was stranded four runs away from his maiden Test century as his side folded for 233. Mahmudullah's was a sterling 156-ball knock studded with 13 fours.

The last two wickets produced 78 crucial runs that lent some respectability to the home side's total. In reply, India milked 69 runs off the 13 overs they faced with Virender Sehwag (41 off 40 balls) and Gautam Gambhir (26 off 38 balls) scoring at a brisk rate while staying put at stumps.

India would return on Monday to first wipe out the 164 run deficit and then push for a big total to bat the hosts out of the match and complete a 2-0 rout in the series.

Bollywood rules 56th National Awards

Bollywood ruled the 56th National Film Awards, bagging as many as 13 awards, with films like Fashion, Rock On!, Firaaq and Jodha AkbarAntaheen won the best feature film award and three more.

While Madhur Bhandarkar's Fashion, a dark tale about the Indian fashion industry, won its actress Priyanka Chopra the best actress award and got Kangana Ranaut the best supporting actress honour, Farhan Akhtar's cult music-based film Rock On! got the best Hindi film award. Actor Arjun Rampal won the best supporting actor for the film too.  

Ashutosh Gowariker's epic Jodha Akbar won Chinni Prakash and his wife Rekha Prakash the best choreography award for the song Azeem-o-shaan shehenshah, a number that depicts dance forms of different Indian states. Fashion designer Neeta Lulla, who styled actress Aishwarya Rai in the film, has won the best costume designer award. 

Nandita Das' directorial debut Firaaq, which was based on the 2002 Gujarat riots, has won the awards for best editing (A. Sreekar Prasad) and best art direction (Gautam Sen). 

Even films like A Wednesday, Roadside Romeo, Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!, Mumbai Meri Jaan and Thanks Maa took one award each. While Neeraj Pandey's A Wednesday has bagged the Indira Gandhi award for Best First Film of a director, Yash Raj Films' Roadside Romeo bagged the best animation film. 

Dibakar Banerjee's satirical Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! has been adjudged the best popular film providing wholesome entertainment, Mumbai Meri Jaan directed by Nishikant Kamat has got the award for best special effects (Govardhan), and Thanks Maa has got Shams Patel the best child artist award. The award for best direction has gone to Bala for Tamil film Naan Kadauul, while the best actor is Upendra Limaye for Marathi film Jogva. Bengali film Antaheen, directed by Annirudh Roy-Chowdhary, has won four awards including for best feature film.

Air, rail traffic suffer as dense fog grips Delhi

 

Dense fog engulfed the national capital on Thursday morning and visibility dropped to zero in the early hours. At least 48 flights and nearly 75 train services were hit -- the latter stranding commuters at railway stations with little hope of timely travel, officials said.

"The visibility dropped to zero this morning with dense fog conditions. The visibility at 8.30 a.m. continued to be poor and was recorded at less than 50 meters," an official at the India Meteorological department told IANS.

The official added that the dense fog would not clear till 2.00 p.m.

The fog badly disrupted flight arrivals and departures at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport. At least 48 domestic and international flights were affected, an IGI airport official said.

"With the visibility plummeting to zero, low visibility procedures were employed. However, there were many delays and rescheduling of flights," the official said.

Even worse hit was the railways schedule.

According to a Northern Railway spokesperson, 20 trains were cancelled, 32 re-scheduled and 24 delayed because of the adverse weather conditions.

"The trains have been affected. Delays of three hours or more are mostly in Delhi-bound trains. The situation is also likely to cause disruption of train timings later in the day," the official warned.

The minimum temperature recorded Thursday morning was 7.2 degrees Celsius, the Met office said adding that the daytime temperature is likely to touch a maximum of 16 degrees Celsius.
