There were scenes of desperation as the temple town remained cut off from all sides on Friday. Caught between hope and despair, thousands of people in the town and nearby villages shrieked for help from rooftops as Tungabhadra flood waters gushed into their homes.

All but 50 out of 1,600-odd houses in the town could be seen as the flood waters rose up to 13 ft at several places, while the famous Sri Raghavendra Swamy temple was completely submerged. The bus station and police station were marooned as some passengers climbed on top of the bus complex building.

Even the Moola Brindavanam (it is the place where the saint Sri Raghavendra Swamy's samadhi is located) in the temple was under sheets of water. Mantralayam is 70 km from Kurnool. The temple authorities removed the hundi boxes from the place and shifted them to a safer place. Mutt Peetadhipati Sushamindra Theertha Swamiji was also trapped in the flood waters. He along with his disciples was later rescued by a chopper from Karnataka.
