Spreading the message of peace and communal harmony got a new dimension. The Children's welfare centre school ground, Versova, was filled with people from different communities. The gathering marked a function, organized by Mohalla committee movement trust (MCTM) in collaboration with the Mumbai police, to mark the start of the communal harmony week, from November 15 to November 21, called 'Indradhanush'. People and children dressed in traditional outfits of various faiths added colour to the event.
Executive chairman, MCTM, Julio Ribeiro, commissioner of police D Sivanandhan, MCTM trustee KM Aarif, additional commissioner of police (west) Amitabh Gupta, and actress Priyanka Chopra graced the occasion.
The events lined up for the week are poetry, essay and elocution competitions, Hindi plays, a football tournament and folk dances. On Tuesday, a long human chain will be formed by students from Bandra to Andheri to propagate the message of peace and harmony.
According to Rebeiro, MCTM, which started about 15 years ago, has been doing a lot of work: "The mohalla movement should be active throughout the year. It is important for the police to know that there is active support from the people who can give them information about terrorism and other such activities. Sivanandan has given tremendous support to the movement."
For now, the committee operates in about 37 police stations. "We plan to spread the movement to more areas," said Aarif.
"I have been associated with MCMT since its inception," said Sivanandhan. "When I became commissioner, I decided to speed up the process of involving people and spreading the message."
