Mahela Jayawardene scored a sparkling 27th test century to put Sri Lanka in control of the first test against India in Ahmedabad on Wednesday, 18th November 2009.
Former captain Jayawardene was batting on a fluent 142 off 225 balls and guided the visitors to 483-5 at tea
Jayawardene took his overnight stand with Thilan Samaraweera (70) to 138 after Sri Lanka resumed the day at 275 for three, then shared in a sixth-wicket partnership of 108 runs with Prasanna Jayawardene (43), unbroken over a full session.
Sri Lanka, second behind South Africa in the official test rankings, are aiming to win their first test on Indian soil since their first visit in 1982.
Centuries by Rahul Dravid (177) and skipper Mahendra Dhoni (110) helped India recover from 32 for four and post 426 after choosing to bat first in the three-test series.
