Scared to lose connectivity by the end of the day, users of handsets without IMEI numbers are rushing to get IMEI numbers before the deadline. The morning saw huge rush at the Telecare centers to get IMEI numbers. Today is the deadline when the phone numbers without IMEI numbers would be discontinued as per DoT directive.
“The rush is there for the last three-to-four days but today there are at least 150-200 people at ever center,” says Rajesh Sharma, a representative of Telecare. Around 1800 centers across the country are offering this service. Telecare has the capacity of handing out 70,000 to 80,000 IMEI numbers in one day. The company has been appointed to give out IMEI numbers.
Explaining the process of getting IMEI number, Sharma says, “A customer doesn't have to get any Id proof or anything. We take the photograph and ID proof there are then. He has to give Rs 199 and IMEI number is put directly on the phone.” However, he refused to give the number of IMEI numbers changed by them.
The 15-digit International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number helps security agencies trace calls made from and received on handsets. As per industry estimates, over 25 mn handsets are in circulation without IMEI numbers. In the wake of increased threat perception from terrorists, the Department of Telecom had asked operators not to allow calls to be completed on handsets without the IMEI number after November 30.
