Govt formulates National Solar Mission; set for launch soon

After a series of consultations with stakeholders, the government has formulated the ambitious National Solar Mission implementation plan to be launched soon

The National Solar Mission document which sets a target of 20,000 Mw for solar power by 2020 was in principle approved by Prime Minister's Council of Climate Change in its meeting last month.
"Now, the recommendations of the Mission have been finalised and an implementation plan has been formulated after a series of consultations both within government as well as other stakeholders outside the government," a statement from the PMO said here.
It added that the Mission will be launched as soon as approval of the government to the recommendations has been obtained.
Earlier, the Mission was proposed to be launched tomorrow.
Besides the National Solar Mission, the council has approved Mission on Himalayan Ecosystems and Energy Efficient Missions out of the eight missions under the National Action Plan on Climate Change unveiled by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh last year.
While the solar mission sets a goal of making the country dependent on renewable energy, the national mission on enhanced energy efficiency will have a target of about Rs 75,000 crore worth transactions in energy efficient systems.
Other missions target water efficiency, sustainable habitat, afforestation and agriculture.
