India has seen a gradual reduction in maternal mortality and in under 5 child mortality rate over the past few decades. The 11th five year plan sets out the objective of reducing maternal mortality ratio to 1 per 1000 live births, reducing infant mortality rate to 28 per 1000 live births and reducing Total Fertility Rate to 2.1,all this to be achieved by 2012 the last year of the current plan. India’s commitment to achieving the MDG goals 4 and 5 would require us to meet these targets by the year 2015.

As per this report the rate of increase in institutional deliveries is slow from 26% in 1992-93 to 47% in 2007-08.Skilled birth attendance at deliveries has increased from 33% to 52% in the same period. By 2015 India can expect only 62% deliveries to be attended by skilled personnel. The rural urban gap in coverage by skilled birth attendants in 2005-06 was 36%.However the projections in institutional delivery have since been greatly accelerated with the introduction of the Janini Suraksha Yojna.

India’s Infant mortality rate declined from 129 deaths per 1000 live births in 1971 to 53 in 2008.The rate of decline has been slowing from 19 points in the 1970s to 16 points in current decade. Currently the urban IMR is 36 as compared to the rural IMR of 58. Total Fertility Rate had reduced from 5.2 in 1971 to 2.6 in 2008.In all but six states at current rates of decline India would be able to achieve replacement levels by 2015.However these six states account for much of the population and there is much to be done before these modest goals are achieved.

The tragic air crash incident of Air India has been shocking everyone. As per latest news, the rescue team was able to recover 127 bodies at the wreckage site outside Mangalore International Airport by mid-afternoon. This is what Air India Director Anup Srivastava told CNN. 166 passengers has been reported to be on board of the crashed plane and about 6 survived and were taken to the nearby hospitals.

Air India Flight IX-812 or the Boeing 737 took off from Dubai and crashed while trying to make its scheduled landing in Mangalore at 6:30 a.m. Saturday (9 p.m. ET Friday). According to the witnesses who have seen the incident, the plane crashed through the hilltop airport’s boundary wall and fell into a valley.

For those survivors, they told CNN-IBN that they jumped out of the plane after it crashed, seconds before it burst into flames. There has been difficulty for the rescuers to get into the crash site because it is a hilly wooded area.

Air India pilots called off their five-day strike Wednesday following assurances from the civil aviation ministry that there would be no salary cuts.

'We have received official communication from civil aviation minister (Praful Patel) and he himself has assured that there would be no salary cuts. So we immediately call off the strike,' said Captain V.K. Bhalla, a senior executive pilot who was spearheading the strike.

'We have no reason to not trust the civil aviation minister. I am asking all the pilots to come back on work. We would now fully cooperate with the management. We also apologise to passengers for the inconvenience caused,' Bhalla added.

'Captain V.K. Bhalla is not above the government of India,' he said at a crowded press conference.

The strike had begun Saturday with 180 Air India pilots going on sick leave to protest the cut in their PLI (productivity linked incentives).

Till Tuesday, day four of the strike, 100 flights had been cancelled. On Wednesday morning, 28 flights, including two international, had been cancelled.

Technical engineers and Mumbai-based pilots had also joined the strike, which was being led by the Delhi faction of the senior executive pilots.

The pilots had been protesting the cut in their wages, but the airline had maintained this was being done as it had reported losses of over Rs.7,200 crore since the last fiscal.

When asked about huge losses to Air India, Bhalla said the profitability of any airlines was directly related to fuel consumption. 'We will advise the management on how to prevent wasteful expenditure,' he said. Giving an instance, he said if Air India was sponsoring a golf tournament the pilots would suggest that it should not do so.

Air India mulls 15-day flight suspension

 India's state-owned Air India is considering a suspension of its operations for about 15 days after the management's talks with pilots failed to break a deadlock over pay issues

At least 40 Air India flights were canceled Monday after scores of pilots reported sick, according to The Economic Times. The pilots had gone on strike to protest the loss-making airline's decision to slash performance-linked incentives paid to employees by 25% to 50%.

Air India, which had accumulated losses of 75 billion rupees ($1.56 billion) as of March 2009, has asked for a 50 billion rupee equity-infusion from the government to be able to continue its operations
