Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi visits Mumbai on Friday, 5th ebruary 2010 against the backdrop of the raging ‘Mumbai for Marathis’ controversy.

Today Rahul Gandhi is all set to visit Mumbai, and Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray ordered party cadres to greet Rahul Gandhi with black flags to mark their protests when he visits Mumbai tomorrow after the unfazed Congress leader stuck to his schedule.

Gearing up for the Congress leader’s visit, authorities have tightened security at venues during his interactions with youths and slum dwellers even as Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan warned of strict action if anyone takes law into their hands.

Section 144 has been imposed on the routes that the Congress General Secretary will travel on. Reports suggest some Shiv Sainiks have been taken in preventive detention.

“We have taken all precautions to ensure that the programmes of Rahul Gandhi pass off peacefully. Adequate number of policemen have been deployed at these places,” City Police Commissioner D Sivanandhan said.

More than 80 people were killed in one of the most horrific terror attacks in Pakistan this year when a massive bomb blast tore through a bustling market here Wednesday, shortly after US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton began a three-day trip to the country.
As doctors battled to save several of the seriously injured in hospitals, North West Frontier Province (NWFP) officials said many of the 200 injured could succumb to their injuries. Hospital sources told The News that 87 people had been killed in the blast.
Pakistani media reported that a building in the congested locality of Meena Bazar collapsed. A mosque bore the brunt. The windows of buildings were shattered. Several vehicles and around 15 shops were burnt.
The deafening blast, heard almost all over Peshawar, occurred in a market that is hugely popular with women. Most of the dead were said to be women.
Once the dust raised by the explosion settled down, stunned shopkeepers rushed to the rescue of the injured, including children. They also joined security personnel in digging through the debris in a desperate hunt for survivors.

Goa government is examining the possibility of banning Sanatan Sanstha, the right wing group suspected to behind the blast in Margao last week.

"We are examining whether the outfit can be banned. There is no formal decision on the issue," State Advocate General Subodh Kantak said today.

The law department is examining whether it (Sanatan Sanstha) can be banned centrally or a state specific ban can be imposed, he said.

Sanatan Sanstha is under the police scanner after a blast in Margao on Diwali-eve killed two of its activists.

The role of this outfit, allegedly linked to Malegaon blast accused sadhvi Pragya Singh, in the blast figures prominently after two of its activists, who died in the blast, were named as prime accused in the case.

Sanatan Saunstha responsible for Goa blast, says minister

Goa Home Minister Ravi Naik said the Sanatan Saunstha organisation was responsible for the low intensity blast in Margao town on Friday night, in which one person was killed and another critically injured. 

Speaking to reporters in Margao, Naik confirmed that the vehicle in which the explosives were placed belonged to Nishad Bakhale, an alleged member of the Sanatan Saunstha, a right-wing Hindu group, which is headquartered in the temple town of Ramnathi in the Ponda region of Goa.

Bakhale has been detained for questioning by the police.

Naik said the police were conducting search operations at the group's headquarters after the blast.

The police said Malgondi Patil and Yogesh Naik, who were riding the Honda Eterno scooter when the blast occurred, were members of the group.

Patil succumbed to his injuries few hours after the blast, while Naik is in critical condition and is being operated upon at the Goa Medical College, near Panaji.

The blast took place near the Grace Church in Margao, where some effigies of Narkasur, a mythical demon, were symbolically being burnt to celebrate the victory of good over evil on the eve of Diwali.

Police superintendent Atmaram Deshpande said a red alert had been declared a few minutes after the blast and it would remain until the situation stabilises.

 'We Hindus in Pakistan are being discriminated against, tortured and harassed,' complains Ram Lal, a 45-year-old migrant from Pakistan, one of the estimated 10,000 migrants from that country settled in and around here in the desert state of Rajasthan.

He came to Jodhpur with his family of five over six months ago when, he says, things started to worsen.

'I do not want to go back....being a Hindu, there are so many problems for you in Pakistan,' Ram Lala told IANS, adding that only one member of his family, his brother, now lives in Pakistan.

'In Pakistan we, being Hindus, are not allowed to eat in a restaurant or a dhaba and if allowed by chance, we are served food in different utensils which we have to clean ourselves after eating,' said Ram Lal, whose name was changed on request, as he feared for the safety of his brother.

Ram Lal, who used to work in a farm in Dilshakh near Hyderabad in Sindh province, said: 'Hindus were given a paltry remuneration in comparison to Muslims and we had no one to complain to'.

Imran Kumar, another Hindu refugee, adopted a Muslim name saying this was the best way to live peacefully in Pakistan. His father's name is Nemi Kumar.

'I come from a Hindu family. I did not change my religion, I only changed my name and it helped me to get admission in school easily,' said Imran, a man in his early 30s, adding that if you are a Hindu in Pakistan it is most likely that you will not get admission in educational institutions.

Lal and Kumar are not the only Pakistani refugees in Jodhpur. According to rough estimates by Seemant Lok Sangathan (SLS), a group working for refugees in Rajasthan, over 10,000 Hindu migrants from Pakistan are living in this city.

Over 5,300 of them were granted citizenship till 2005 and SLS says more than 5,000 others have now already applied for long term visa (LTV).

SLS president Hindu Singh Sodha said: 'The LTV number keeps on changing because whoever stays here for six months can apply for it to the union home ministry and according to our information, the displaced who have applied for LTV till date are around 5,000.'

'Religious persecution, discrimination and harassment of the Hindu minority are the main reasons behind people wanting to come to India. While the Pakistani government has discriminatory policies for the minority community members, they are also victims of rising fundamentalism in Pakistan,' Ranaram told IANS.

Sangli (Maharashtra) Sep 7 (ANI): Tension prevails in the Sangli District of Maharashtra following a clash between two communities.

The curfew, which is in force since Friday, has crippled normal life.

Sangli and its neighboring town Miraj are witnessing severe clash between two communities since Thursday, when some members of a community allegedly damaged a Ganesh pendal depicting the historical scene of Shivaji killing Afzal Khan.

Following the incident most of the Ganesh Mandals in the district have refused to immerse the idol.

The administration is expected to review the situation on Monday evening.

Maharashtra State Home Minister Jayant Patil, who also hails form the same district, visited the clash-hit areas on Sunday and urged members of both the communities to maintain peace and harmony.

It all began after a temporary arch was put up by local mandals dominated by saffron alliance sympathizers. The arch displayed a scene of the slaying of Afzal Khan by Chhatrapati Shivaji.

Though, initially the district administration had refused the permission to put up the arch, fearing that it would lead to tension. However, due to the mediation by the senior Shiv Sena leader Diwakar Raote the district administration granted the permission. (ANI)
