With a spurt in incidents of honour killings across the country, the Government today decided to set up a Group of Ministers (GoM) to consider amendments to the law to deal with the issue and said the bill for that will be brought in the monsoon session of Parliament.

"Government wants amendments to be brought to Parliament in the monsoon session," information and broadcasting minister Ambika Soni told reporters after the meeting of the Union Cabinet.

Apart from a Group of Ministers (GoM) which would be set up to consider amendments to the law to deal with honour killings, views will also be sought from states to the proposed amendments to IPC and CrPC to deal with the killings, Soni said.

On 2 September 2009, a helicopter carrying Reddy went missing in the Nallamala forest area. On the morning of 3 September 2009, media agencies reported that the helicopter had been found crashed on top of Rudrakonda Hill, 40 nautical miles from Kurnool. This was later confirmed by the Prime Minister's office and all five people aboard were pronounced dead at the scene.[7][8][9]

Medical College, Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh. He was the elected leader of the House Surgeon's Association at S.V. Medical College, Tirupati.
Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy practiced medicine for sometime in his native Kadapa District. The hospital his father built for him at Pulivendula is still running. His family also built and ran a degree college and a polytechnic college at Pulivendula which was later handed over to the Loyola Group of Educational Institutions. Another junior college at Simhadripuram, a small town in the vicinity of Pulivendula, is run by his family.He never lost an election through out his political career of 30 years.[20]

Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy's Bell 430 helicopter went missing on Wednesday, 2 September 2009 at 9:35 am. Begumpet and Shamshabad Air Traffic controllers lost contact with the aircraft at 9:02 am while it was passing through the dense Nallamala forest area.[33] The Chief Secretary of Andhra Pradesh, P. Ramakanth Reddy, said that inclement weather had forced the helicopter off-course. Although the sparsely populated forest area is considered to be stronghold of the outlawed Naxal communist insurgents, the National Security Advisor of India ruled out the possibility of the Naxals bringing down the helicopter.

The top leaders of Congress are discussing a big cabinet reshuffle, likely to be done prior to the next Parliament monsoon-session.

The reson behind the reshuffle is Sharad Pawar's request to Manmohan to reduce his "burden." Yesterday Sharad Pawar met the PM for this. Pawar appointed President of the International Cricket Council (ICC) last week for two years.

Jyoti Basu, veteran Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader who was West Bengal chief minister for 23 years and straddled Indian politics for over six decades, died here Sunday after a prolonged illness. He was 95.

'Jyoti Basu is no more,' said party state secretary Biman Bose.

Basu had been put on life support system since Friday at AMRI Hospital, where he was admitted on January 1 after complaining for pneumonia.

Doctors at AMRI Hospital had stated that Basu's lung, kidney and haemo dynamic system had failed. Besides his heart was also partially affected.

BANGALORE: Former prime minister and Janata Dal-Secular president H D Deve Gowda landed himself in controversy on Sunday by publicly saying "bloody bastard", but claimed the invective was not hurled at Karnataka chief minister B S Yeddyurappa.

Gowda, who had joined farmers protesting land acquisition for the Bangalore-Mysore Infrastructure Corridor (BMIC) on the outskirts of Bangalore, while responding to reporters gave the impression that he was abusing Yeddyurappa.

Talking to reporters at the protest venue, an angry Gowda shouted "who is he, that bloody bastard". He also used a Kannada invective bosudi maga which translates to "son of a bitch".

He later clarified that he was not referring to Yeddyurappa.

However, statements from Gowda's two sons - former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy and former minister H D Revanna - defending the father indicated that they too thought the reference was to Yeddyurappa.

Yeddyurappa had on Saturday criticised Gowda for joining the farmers' protest even though Gowda had himself cleared the project when he was the Karnataka chief minister in 1995 and the Supreme Court had cleared the land allotment.

With Kannada TV channels telecasting the episode, the state's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party leaders reacted angrily while Yeddyurappa said he did not expect a former prime minister to stoop so low in public discourse.

He said it appeared Gowda had lost equanimity.

Kodihalli Chandrashekar, a prominent farmer leader, also disapproved of Gowda resorting to abusive language in the name of protecting farmer interests.

Kumaraswamy and Revanna, however, defended their father, saying the attack was on Yeddyurappa as an individual and not as the chief minister.

Gowda later told a TV channel that he was referring to state Advocate General Ashok Harnahalli as a Kannada daily in which Harnhalli has interests had carried a nasty cartoon and a derisive article against him in its Sunday edition.

He accused the advocate general of misleading the Supreme Court on land allotment for the BMIC.

Gowda has been waging a long battle against what he calls excess land allotment for the BMIC project.

The project comprises of a four-lane express highway between Bangalore and Mysore, five integrated townships for a population of 100,000 each and a commercial centre and other facilities along the 111-km corridor.

Stretches of the highway have been completed and opened to traffic.

We are working on this issue and I sincerely hope that they will get a chance to vote by the time of the next regular general elections. In fact, I would go a step further and ask why more overseas Indians should not return home to join politics and public life as they are increasingly doing in business and academia," he added.

Jyoti Basu (Bengali: জ্যোতি বসু) (July 8, 1914) is a politician belonging to the Communist Party of India (Marxist) from West Bengal, India. He served as the Chief Minister of Bengal from 1977 to 2000, was India's longest-serving Chief Minister. He was a member of the CPI(M) Politburo from the time of the party's founding in 1964 until 2008.[

Background

Basu was born into an upper middle-class Bengali family in Calcutta. He was initially named Jyotirindra Basu. But the name was shortened to Jyoti when he joined school. His father Nishikanta Basu, a doctor, hailed from the village of Barodi in Dhaka District, East Bengal (now in Bangladesh).[3] He got his school education at St. Xavier's Collegiate School. He graduated from Presidency College with an honours degree from the Art Faculty in 1935, and subsequently travelled to the United Kingdom to study law. He was introduced to the Communist Party of Great Britain through Bhupesh Gupta.

Basu returned to India in 1940 after qualifying for the Bar and became a whole-timer of the Communist Party of India. In 1944 Basu became involved in trade union activities. CPI delegated him to work amongst the railway labourers. When B.N. Railway Workers Union and B.D. Rail Road Workers Union merged Basu became the general secretary of the union.

Political career
Basu was elected to the Bengal Legislative Assembly in 1946, contesting the Railway constituency. When the Communist Party of India split in 1964, Basu became one of the first nine members of the Politburo of the newly-formed Communist Party of India (Marxist). In 1967 and 1969, Basu became Deputy Chief Minister of West Bengal in the United Front governments.

From June 21, 1977 to November 6, 2000, Basu served as the Chief Minister of West Bengal for the Left Front government. In 1996 Jyoti Basu seemed all set to be the consensus leader of the United Front for the post of Prime Minister of India. However, the CPI(M) Politburo decided not to participate in the government, a decision that Jyoti Basu later termed a historic blunder. H.D. Deve Gowda from the Janata Dal instead became Prime Minister.

Basu resigned from the Chief Ministership of West Bengal in 2000 for health reasons and was succeeded by fellow CPI(M) politician Buddhadeb Bhattacharya. As of 2009, Basu holds the record for being the longest-serving Chief Minister in Indian political history.

The 18th congress of CPI(M), held in Delhi in 2005, re-elected Basu to its Politburo, although he had asked to be allowed to retire from it.[1] On September 13, 2006, Basu entreated the CPI(M) to allow his retirement due to his age, but was turned down. General Secretary Prakash Karat said that the party wanted Basu to continue until its 2008 congress, at which point it would reconsider At the 19th congress in early April 2008, Basu was not included on the Politburo,[1][2] although he remained a member of the Central Committee[1] and was designated as Special Invitee to the Politburo.[1][2]

On January 1, 2010, Basu was admitted to a Calcutta hospital after feeling unwell.[5][6] . As of Jan 6, 2010, his health condition is critical.[7][8]

Thackeray home on verge of another split; Smita to join Congress

Mumbai: The Thackeray household is on the verge of another political split with daughter-in-law Smita Thackeray toying with the idea of joining theCongress.
Smita, wife of Jaydev Thackeray, who had been finding it tough to play a dominant role in Shiv Sena affairs, has indicated that she was feeling choked in the Thackeray household, unable to gain a political hold that had been thwarted by the senior Thackeray time and again.
Sources close to her indicated that she is likely to meet Congress president Sonia Gandhi soon and felt at home with the Congress ideology.
Highly politically ambitious, Smita had been a power centre during the Sena-BJP reign from 1995 to 1999. She later wanted to enter the Rajya Sabha, but her aspiration came to a nought as despite a promise to her, Thackeray senior backed journalist Bharat Kumar Raut over her, the sources said.
Ms Thackeray, who continued to stay in Matoshree even after being estranged from her husband, was highly disturbed by this and had to be admitted to Lilavati Hospital due to chest pain, and later shifted to Juhu. She also felt snubbed by Bal Thackeray when her second contribution to party organ Saamna was rejected by theShiv Sena supremo after her maiden article received favourable response.
Once acknowledged as Mr Thackeray's favourite daughter-in-law, Smita later dabbled with Hindi movies as a producer besides some Marathi soaps and talkshows, but never hid her ambition to be in active politics. Political observers feel the main reason for the outburst was she was feeling completely sidelined in the power corridor with son Uddhav in complete command. Sources inCongress said the party would be happy to welcome Smita as this would be another major blow to the Shiv Sena, which is already facing a tough time, after nephew Raj Thackeray left the party to float Maharashtra Navnirman Sena in 2005.

A section of poll strategists in the party still feels that the erosion in the votebank cannot be stemmed before the 2011 Assembly polls, making it a fair chance for the Mamata Banerjee-led Opposition in the polls.

The SMC results will show if the ‘wave of change’ ushered in by the Opposition still continues. Since 1981, the LF has won all the SMC polls it contested, as its victory was considered to be caused by the division of votes in the Opposition camp. This time, however, the Trinamool and the Congress together contested against the Left Front candidates.
