Hundreds of thousands of women carrying bricks, firewood, rice, jaggery and coconut have converged around the Attukal Bhagavathi temple here for a mega festival known as pongala Sunday. Authorities expect the crowd to exceed last year's three million.

The women devotees from Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu will make a cooked rice offering to the presiding deity on pongala.

Only those who came three days ago have managed to bag a place near the temple, dedicated to Attukal Bhagavathi, believed to be an incarnation of Kannaki, the central character of the Tamil epic 'Silappathikaaram'.

According to temple officials, all arrangements are in place for the festival and this time the crowd is expected to be bigger than last year.

'We have made all arrangements for the smooth conduct of the festival. Security arrangements are also in place with closed circuit TV and extra police force. The sanitation facilities are also ready,' said temple trust chairman R. Ravindran Nair.

The offering is made on the penultimate day of the 10-day-long Attukal Pongala festival, which is often referred to as the equivalent of the Sabarimala pilgrimage for women.

The women devotees cook the rice offering by sitting on either side of the roads that lead to the temple. They light their stoves after the chief priest lights the main stove in the temple compound at about 10.30 a.m.

About 20 sq km area around the temple is occupied by the women devotees to cook their offering.

The Guinness Book of Records listed the festival as the world's largest annual gathering of women in 1997, when 1.5 million devotees converged here Feb 23.

King Daksha in order to discourage her daughter from marrying to such an ugly looking man surrounded by serpents and devils organized a religious ceremony and insulted Lord Shiva publicly. In anger Sati ended her life by jumping in fire knowing which Shiva started Tandav dance to destroy the world. In order to appease Shiva, sati was revived in the form of Parvati and the union of Shiva and Parvati marked Maha shivaratri celebrations

· Mahashivratri Story Two: Lubhdak Story
Once lived a tribal lubhdak a great Shiva devotee. One day he went to forrest to collect wood but lost his way. During night due to the fear of wild animals he climbed a bael tree and started chanting “om namah shivaya” and started dropping down bael leaves not realizing that there is a shivlingm located beneath the tree. Lord shiva pleased with his devotion saved his life and since then Maha shivaratri is celebrated by presenting Shiva with bael leaves besides other things

Pongal is a Hindu festival celebrated by the South Indians. Simply put, it is Indian Thanksgiving. It is known as “Harvest festival”. This occasion signals the end of the traditional farming season, giving farmers a break from their monotonous routine and symbolizes the veneration of the first fruit.

The crop is harvested only after a certain time of the year, and cutting the crop before that time is strictly prohibited. Prayers to sun god are offered for giving prosperity by way of a great harvest. Milk is brought to a boil in earthen pots and allowed to overflow while farmers chant “Pongalo Pongal” (which in Tamil mean ‘to overflow”. This overflow signifies wealth and prosperity – enough to even allow it to spill over!

Beautiful patterns are drawn on the floor, earthen pots decorated, sugarcane’s abound. This festival is celebrated for 4 days each representing an essence.
Day 1 : Boghi (celebrated Jan on 13th)
On this day its all about Bonfires – where all old materials and clothes are thrown and burnt. It is believed to mark the beginning of a fresh life – In short a new beginning.

In Madurai “Jallikattu” is celebrated which is an event for taming the wild bull. Variety of rices are prepared on this day.

Hundreds of devotees started trekking the holy Sabari Hills in Kerala as the two-month long annual pilgrimage season got under way today with the temple opening on the eve of the auspicious month of 'Vrishchikam' of the Malayalam calendar.

Despite steady drizzle, Lord Ayyappa devotees, mostly from southern states, have begun to pour into foothills Pampa, from where the five-km trek to the uphill shrine starts.

The first leg of the pilgrimage, 41-day "mandala" season, got under way with traditional high priest Kantararu Maheswaru opening the temple portals. This was followed by ceremonous anointment of new chief priests (melsanthis) for the main shrine and adjoining Malikappuram Devi temples.

The "Mandala pooja" would be held on December 26. The temple will be closed for four days, after which the "Makaravilakku" season will start, culminating with the 'makara jyoti' (celestial light) darshan on January 14.


HOW TO REACH SABARIMALA

Sabarimala By Air

The nearest airports are at Kochi and Trivandrum. Trivandrum International Airport is located at a distance of 175 km from Sabarimala. Nedumbassery International Airport at Kochi is at a distance of about 190 km from Sabarimala. Pre-paid taxi services are available from both airports to Pampa, 4 km away from Sabarimala Temple. Taxi charges about Rs 2500 for one way. The airports are well connected to all major airports in India and also are connected to many foreign cities.

One can get KSRTC buses frequently to Pamba. 4 km trekking from Pamba is required to reach Sabarimala. Pmaba is well connected by KSRTC buses to all cities in Kerala. Guru Nanak Dev Ji (Punjabi: ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਵ, Hindi: गुरु नानक देव, Urdu: گرونانک Guru Nānak) (15 April 1469 -22 September 1539) is the first of the ten Sikh Gurus. Sikhs believe that all subsequent Gurus possessed Guru Nanak's divinity and religious authority.

Guru Nanak Dev was born on 15 April 1469^[2][3], now celebrated as Prakash Divas of Guru Nanak, into the BediKshatriya family (a prominent Hindu community of Punjab),^[4] in the village of Rāi Bhōi dī Talwandī, now calledNankana Sahib, near Lahore, Pakistan.^[5] Today, his birthplace is marked by Gurdwara Janam Asthan. His father, Mehta Kalyan Das Bedi, popularly shortened to Mehta Kalu^[6], was the patwari (accountant) of crop revenue for the village of Talwandi in the employment of a Muslim landlord of that area, Rai Bular Bhatti ^[7]. Guru Nanak's mother was Tripta Devi and he had one elder sister, Bebe Nanaki.

The earliest biographical sources on the life of Guru Nanak recognized today are the Janamsākhīs (life accounts) and the vārs (expounding verses) of the scribeBhai Gurdas. The most popular Janamsākhī are written by a close companion of the Guru, Bhai Bala.

Bhai Gurdas, a purported scribe of the Gurū Granth, also wrote about Guru Nanak's life in his vārs. Although these too were compiled some time after Guru Nanak's time, they are less detailed than the Janamsākhīs. The Janamsākhīs recount in minute detail the circumstances of the birth of the guru. The Janamsakhis state that at his birth an astrologer, who came to write his horoscope, insisted on seeing the child. On seeing the infant, he is said to have worshipped him with clasped hands and remarked that "I regret that I shall never live to see young Guru Nanak as an adult.”

At the age of five years Guru Nanak is said to have voiced interest in divine subjects. At age seven, his father, Mehta Kalu, enrolled him at the village school as was the custom.^[8] Notable lore recounts that as a child Guru Nanak astonished his teacher by describing the implicit symbolism of the first letter of the alphabet, which is an almost straight stroke in Persian or Arabic, resembling the mathematical version of one, as denoting the unity or oneness ofGod^[9]. Other childhood accounts refer to strange and miraculous events about Guru Nanak witnessed by Rai Bular such as a poisonous cobra being seen to shield the sleeping child's head from the harsh sunlight.

The Sikh community celebrates Guru Nanak Jayanti ( Gurpurab) . The festival is a memorial of Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s Birthday. He is known as the founder of Sikh religion. The festival is celebrated every year with great pomp and show across the globe.

In India especially in Punjab, people comes from different states to celebrate Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s Birthday with religious fervour at Golden temple in Amritsar.

This year Gurpurab is on 2nd November, 2009 and to mark the occasion the celebrations are being organised in various Gurudwaras across the India. In Delhi Gurdwaras like BangleSahib, Sisganj, Majnu ka tila are organising Langars and massive parade will follow the Guru Granth sahib when it will be carried out of Gurudwara.

All the Gurudwaras will be light up decoratively and people will come to worship waheguru on the auspicious occasion of Guru Nanak Jayanti
