ISLAMABAD: Days after winning the hearts of numerous Indian fans with his remarks after his team's loss in the World Cup semifinal, Pakistan cricket captain Shahid Afridi has said Indians are not as large-hearted as Pakistanis.




Afridi also slammed the Indian media for its "very negative approach" and said the Pakistani media was a "hundred times better" than its Indian counterpart.



"In my opinion, if I have to tell the truth, they (Indians) will never have hearts like Muslims and Pakistanis. I don't think they have the large and clean hearts that Allah has given us," Afridi said during a talk show on Samaa news channel when he was asked about relations between the two countries.



"It is a very difficult thing for us to live with them (Indians) or to have long-term relationship with them. Nothing will come out of talks. See how many times in the past 60 years we have had friendship and then how many times things have gone bad," he said as the audience in the TV channel's studio applauded him repeatedly.

China and Pakistan are expected to discuss long-pending plans to accelerate construction of rail-lines and a pipeline from Kashgar in China's west to the port of Gwadar on the Persian Gulf, during Premier Wen Jiabao's three-day visit to Islamabad which began on Friday.

The plan, officials and analysts say, is bringing new importance to Beijing's ties with Islamabad, given that Pakistan will play a crucial role, both from the point of view of diplomacy and simply, geography, in linking China with Afghanistan and West Asia.

Trucks carrying construction equipment clog the roads, as construction cranes work day and night to transform the historic old town into a sprawling Economic Development Zone — the “Shenzhen of the West”, as one Chinese official says, referring to China's first Special Economic Zone.

“One of the most important reasons why we value our relations with Pakistan is that the country can play the role of a bridge between China and the Muslim world,” Hu Shisheng, a scholar at the China Institutes for Contemporary International Relations (CICIR) told The Hindu in a recent interview ahead of Mr. Wen's visit.

Kashgar's transformation from an ancient Silk Road town to a modern trading hub is gathering pace, said Muhammed Ahmed Khan of the Kashgar-based Pakistan Business and Investment Promotion Council, in an interview during a visit to the city earlier this year.

Pakistan government today presented evidence before an anti-terrorism court against LeT operations chief Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi and six other suspects for their involvement in the Mumbai attacks.

The government's team of prosecutors presented evidence against the accused in the court of Judge Malik Muhammad Akram Awan in Rawalpindi, sources told PTI.

The details and nature of the evidence could not immediately be ascertained.

"Following the presentation of evidence, the judge adjourned the matter till February 13," said Shahbaz Rajput, a lawyer for some of the accused.

Defence lawyers had boycotted the last hearing on January 23 in protest against the failure of authorities to provide them security and facilitate their meetings with their clients at Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail in line with an order of the Lahore High Court.

In the midst of current chill in Indo-Pak relations, a SAARC Home Ministers conference is scheduled next month in Islamabad to which P Chidambaram plans to go subject to Foreign Office's approval.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and External Affairs Minister S M Krishna will discuss the issue and if the External Affairs Ministry allows, the Home Minister will travel to Pakistan to attend the SAARC meeting, a highly placed source said.

The SAARC Interior/Home Ministers' conference is scheduled to be held from February 20 for three days in Islamabad. In case Chidambaram travels to Islamabad, it would be the first Ministerial visit to Pakistan since May, 2008 when the then External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee had gone for talks as part of composite dialogue. Things worsened after the Mumbai terror attack on November 26, 2008.

The third SAARC interior ministers' conference was postponed from November 24 and 27, 2009 at the request from Bangladesh because of parliamentary polls in that country.

The meeting will be attended by ministers from

Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka and is expected to discuss regional cooperation for dealing with the menace of terrorism, narcotics and organised crime. The first such meeting was held in Dhaka on 11 May 2006 followed at New Delhi on 25 October 2007.

In yet another ceasefire violation, Pakistani troops today opened fire at Kanachak sub-sector of Jammu district and the BSF retaliated leading to a heavy exchange of fire between the two sides.

The ceasefire violation came as the country celebrated Republic Day.

The BSF also foiled infiltration bids by militants in the area.

The cross border firing started around 0200 hours even as a group of militants entered the Ulfa Machail border outpost along the International Border and were challenged by a BSF patrolling party, a senior BSF officer said.

The firing between forces from across the border and BSF continued till 0500 hours, he said.

The firing again erupted after a break and was continuing intermittently when reports last came in from the area, he said.

 Neerja Bhanot plane hijackers freed 

Islamabad: Pakistan on Thursday freed four Palestinians convicted of the 1986 hijacking of an American airliner in Karachi that ended with the death of 22 persons including an Indian flight purser Neerja Bhanot, who helped passengers aboard escape.

The hijackers, who were sentenced to life imprisonment, were set free from Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi and put on an international flight to the Gulf region, local TV channels reported.

A group of Palestinians hijacked a Pan Am Boeing 747 carrying 400 passengers while it was being parked at the apron in Karachi in September 1986. The cockpit crew escaped through the emergency hatch but senior flight purser Bhanot stayed on, helping passengers escape.

Twenty-two persons, including Bhanot, died when Pakistani commandos stormed the flight to end the 16-hour siege. Bhanot was awarded Ashok Chakra posthumously by the Indian government. She was at that time the youngest and till date the only woman Ashok Chakra awardee. One of the hijackers, who was injured in the commando operation, died in jail.

The terms of a secret deal under which China transferred 50 kg of uranium to Pakistan in 1982 for making two atomic bombs were set in a mid-1976 conversation between Mao Zedong and then Pakistan prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, a leading US daily reported Friday.

Citing accounts of controversial Pakistani nuclear scientist A.Q. Khan, The Washington Post said Khan - then a metallurgist working at a Dutch centrifuge manufacturer - was provoked to offer his services to Bhutto by India testing its first nuclear bomb two years earlier.

Khan, according to the US daily, said he and two other Pakistani officials - including then foreign secretary Agha Shahi, since deceased - worked out the details when they travelled to Beijing later that year for Mao's funeral.

Over several days, Khan was cited as saying, he briefed three top Chinese nuclear weapons officials - Liu Wei, Li Jue and Jiang Shengjie - on how the European-designed centrifuges could swiftly aid China's lagging uranium-enrichment programme.

Pakistan continues to push in trained terrorists from a large number of terror camps across the border into India, Defence Minister A K Antony said today. This was a matter of serious concern and steps are being taken to check this, he told reporters here.

"Even now, not only the terrorist camps are operating there, (but) there is continuous efforts to push a large number of trained terrorists into Jammu and Kashmir and India. "It is a serious matter, it is a matter of concern to us.

So to prevent that, whatever steps (are) needed we are taking," Antony said. He said it would be difficult to improve ties with Pakistan unless it made "serious" and "sincere" efforts to dismantle the large number of terror camps on its soil.

The terrorist camps operating from Pakistan was the main impediment to improve India-Pakistan relations, Antony said. As a policy, he said India was not for any confrontation with its neighbours.

More than 80 people were killed in one of the most horrific terror attacks in Pakistan this year when a massive bomb blast tore through a bustling market here Wednesday, shortly after US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton began a three-day trip to the country.
As doctors battled to save several of the seriously injured in hospitals, North West Frontier Province (NWFP) officials said many of the 200 injured could succumb to their injuries. Hospital sources told The News that 87 people had been killed in the blast.
Pakistani media reported that a building in the congested locality of Meena Bazar collapsed. A mosque bore the brunt. The windows of buildings were shattered. Several vehicles and around 15 shops were burnt.
The deafening blast, heard almost all over Peshawar, occurred in a market that is hugely popular with women. Most of the dead were said to be women.
Once the dust raised by the explosion settled down, stunned shopkeepers rushed to the rescue of the injured, including children. They also joined security personnel in digging through the debris in a desperate hunt for survivors.

The wife of Pakistani bowling legend Wasim Akram died in an Indian hospital on Sunday after heart and kidney complications, the Press Trust of India reported.

Huma Akram, 42, was admitted to hospital in Chennai last Tuesday after her condition deteriorated in an air ambulance while being flown from the Pakistani city of Lahore to Singapore for treatment.

Wasim Akram, a former Pakistan captain, was at her bedside for the last five days. The couple had two children.

Arrangements are being made to fly her body back to Pakistan, hospital sources told local media.

The marriage of Wasim Akram with Human Akram has lasted for 14 years and the couple had two sons, Taimur and Akbar. A trained medical practitioner herself, Huma had a stint with some of the leading hospitals in Pakistan as a psychologist and a hypnotherapist.

Pakistani warplanes and artillery pounded a Taliban stronghold on Friday, as a suicide bomber killed 12 people in the city of Peshawar in the latest in a bloody wave of militant attacks.

The government says a ground offensive against the Pakistani Taliban in their South Waziristan lair is imminent and the army has been stepping up its air and artillery attacks in recent days to soften up the militants' defences.

The militants have launched a string of brazen attacks in the past 11 days, striking at the United Nations, the army headquarters, police and the general public, killing about 150 people, apparently trying to stave off the army assault.

Friday's blast was outside an office of the police's Central Investigation Agency in the capital of North West Frontier Province, a staging post for U.S. supplies into Afghanistan.

The Lahore High Court on Monday ordered the case against Jamaat-ud-Dawa chief Hafiz Saeed, the alleged mastermind behind the November 26, 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, to be disposed off, saying the country's anti-terror laws did not apply to him.

Saeed's lawyer A K Dogar said the case against his client was weak as it lacked credible evidence.

"There is no evidence against Saeed. My client was wrongly accused of terror," Dogar told a private news television channel.

He added that all notions regarding Saeed's involvement in terror activities, and particularly in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, were false.

"He (Saeed) would be the last person to carry out a terror attack," Dogar said.

Dogar also said that he was convinced that there was a difference between the type of Islam the Taliban espousing and what the Jamaat-ud-Daawa (JuD) was promoting, adding that those who followed Islam with piety and humility, including the Taliban would soon see the benefit of joining hands with the JuD and end their terrorist and insurgent ways.

Former Pakistan High Commissioner to India, Humayun Khan, on Thursday said that terrorist networks are still operating from Pakistan's soil and contended that it has been unable to root them out completely.

Khan was speaking to the media persons at the Wagah border post in Punjab on Thursday.

He is in India as a part of eight-member team to attend the 150th anniversary of the Bishop Cotton School in Shimla. An alumnus of the school, Khan and other seven members will be in Shimla for a couple of days to attend the week-long celebrations at their alma mater.

"Terrorism has created a lot of problems. Our misfortune is that many terrorist centres are still operating from our soil, in tribal areas and elsewhere. Whatever they do, we are blamed for their actions. This is the biggest problem of today's time," said Humayun Khan.

"Any incident related to terrorism - for instance the attack in Mumbai last year, they generally say that Pakistan is not doing anything to control this. I hope there is an understanding that terrorism is the enemy of both countries. We should fight it together. This is how we can improve the situation," Khan added.

He also admitted that Pakistan had patronised terrorist outfits in the past and this policy has now boomeranged.

Twin half centuries from Gautam Gambhir (57) and Rahul Dravid (76) turned out to be heroics for a lost cause as India wilted under pressure to suffer a 54-run defeat to arch rivals Pakistan in their nerve-wrecking opening Champions Trophy match here today.

Asked to chase a big target of 303, mainly due to the listless performance by their slow bowlers, India were all out for 248 in 44.5 overs to start their Champions Trophy campaign on a losing note, in front of a packed house at SuperSport Park here.

Gambhir's dominating 46-ball 57 at the top of order gave India hopes of a successful run chase after Sachin Tendulkar (8) fell early while Dravid held one end together for more than 37 overs for his 103-ball innings which included just four boundaries.

Suresh Raina was the other main contributor with a quick 41-ball 46, which included five fours and two sixes.

A senior Pakistani police official has said Hafiz Mohammad Saeed, blamed by India for masterminding the Mumbai attacks, is not under arrest or protective custody, adding to the confusion over his status, just two days ahead of meeting of foreign ministers of the two countries in United States.

Punjab police chief Tariq Saleem Dogar has said, Saeed is not under arrest or house arrest and he has also not been placed in protective custody.

Saeed has only been "advised" and "requested" to restrict his movements for the sake of his own safety and security, Dogar told a news conference in Rawalpindi Thursday.

India has been demanding speedy investigations against the accused in Mumbai terror attacks particularly Saeed and the issue is set to dominate the meeting between India's External Affairs Minister S M Krishna and his Pakistani counterpart Shah Mahmood Qureshi.

 Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram today said that Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) chief Hafiz Saeed should be interrogated for the Mumbai terror attacks.

Chidambaram after inaugurating non-stop Chennai-New Delhi Duronto Express said that entire evidence against Saeed's involvement in the 26/11 attacks is present in Pakistan itself.

"He has been charged under two FIR's unrelated to the 26/11. But if that is a face saving technique, I have no objection. His role in the 26/11 must be investigated. The evidence is not on Indian soil. All the evidence against Saeed is on Pakistan's soil. Therefore, one must investigate in Pakistan and find evidence in Pakistan," said Chidambaram.

On Saturday, Pakistan had rejected the sixth dossier received from India, saying that the contents provided in it were not enough to arrest or prosecute Saeed in a court of law and asked New Delhi to provide more evidence in connection with the case.

Meanwhile, Saeed has been placed under house arrest. The Pakistani authorities have also barred him from leading Eid prayers.

According to Geo News, a police party was deputed outside his residence in the Johar Town area in Lahore late on Sunday night, restricting his movement.

Saeed's house arrest comes three days after police in Faisalabad registered two FIRs under the Anti-Terrorism Act for inciting people to wage jihad.

Pakistan on Monday responded to India’s accusation that groups like Lashker-e-Toiba are planning attacks from across the border by saying that New Delhi should share actionable information to prevent such incidents.

"We have repeatedly requested the Indian government to share with us whatever information it has in this regard. Sharing of real-time, credible and actionable information on any future terrorist threats was deemed essential by the Prime Ministers of Pakistan and India at the Sharm el-Sheikh summit," said a statement from Pakistan’s Foreign Office spokesman.

The spokesman was reacting to comments made earlier in the day by Home Minister P Chidambaram, who told a meeting of top police officials in New Delhi that Pakistan-based groups like Lashker-e-Toiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) were continuing to plan terror strikes in India.

Chidambaram expressed deep concern over terrorism "emanating from across the border" and said it continues to remain a persistent threat to India’s security. He also said local support for Pakistan-based terror groups had not ended. The Mumbai terror attacks, which have been blamed on the LeT, were a "game changer", he added. Referring to Chidambaram’s remarks "expressing apprehensions on terror strikes being planned by certain groups in Pakistan", the Pakistan Foreign Office spokesman noted that the two Prime Ministers had also agreed during their meeting in Sharm el-Sheikh in July that "terrorism is the main threat to both countries".

"Both leaders also affirmed their resolve to fight terrorism and cooperate with each other to this end," the spokesman said. "Resumption of the composite dialogue and re-activation of the Joint Anti-Terrorism Mechanism offer avenues of pragmatic cooperation, inter alia, including on counter-terrorism," the spokesman said.

Karachi, Sep.8 (ANI): The newly appointed Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Wasim Bari has vowed to bring back international cricket to Pakistan as soon as possible.

"What we need is to break the ice. Pakistan desperately wants to stage international games and we will work on several options to ensure that it happens sooner than later," Bari said.

ari, who replaced Saleem Altaf, said the PCB is working on a proposal to host a Twenty20 match involving international players from different teams.

He said the board is also planning to host couple of T20 matches involving a leading international team.

"There is this proposal of inviting a team like Sri Lanka for a couple of Twenty20 matches in Karachi," The News quoted Bari, as saying.

He expressed hope that Pakistan could host an international event in the next six months, which would thus pave way for more international events.

"It's certainly possible to have one or two international matches in Pakistan within the next six months. Once that happens, I'm sure things will return to normal for Pakistan cricket," Bari said.

He added that hosting a full-fledged Test and one-day series against India on a neutral venue would be a top priority for him.

"It's very important for our cricket to have regular matches against India," he said. (ANI)
