Nissan launches first Thai-promoted "eco-car"

Nissan Motor launched its much-awaited, low-cost compact car on Friday, aiming to become a major force in the fast-growing segment with a global sales target of one million units a year by 2013.
Nissan executives said the company would produce 90,000 of the five-door hatchbacks, built on new "versatile platform" vehicle underpinnings, at its suburban Bangkok plant in the year starting April 1, of which 70,000 would be for export.
The 1,200-cc engine compact, called March in Thailand, China and Japan, and Micra in India, Europe and other markets, is being sold in a price range of 375,000-537,000 baht ($11,500-$16,500), about 20 percent cheaper than similar cars from rivals.
Chief Operating Officer Toshiyuki Shiga said at the global launch that the compact would be sold in more than 160 countries, with Thailand one of four main manufacturing and export hubs along with China, India and Mexico.
He expected production in China to begin in the second half of this year, but declined to provide other details, including its pricing in key Asian markets.
Shiga did not say when his firm would introduce the vehicle in India, where Nissan is looking to take on market leaders Maruti Suzuki India Ltd and Hyundai Motor Co.
DOUBLE PRODUCTION
Production of the March model would nearly double Nissan's Thai car output to 200,000 units a year.
The Micra/March is the Japanese car maker's most important model in years, the culmination of extensive experimenting with new materials and component designs for production in low-cost countries, Chief Executive Carlos Ghosn said at its unveiling at the Geneva car show in early March.
Nissan is the first of six global car makers to obtain generous Thai government incentives to produce small vehicles under the country's "eco-car projects".
Other companies licensed to compete with Nissan in the same segment are Toyota Motor, Mitsubishi Motors, Honda Motor, Suzuki Motor and India's Tata Motors Ltd.
According to the state-run Board of Investment, "eco-cars" are passenger cars that must meet safety, low fuel consumption and "EURO 4" emission standards.
The BOI offers these companies corporate tax exemption for at least five years provided their production reaches 100,000 a year within the first five years of operation.
It said last year the licensed car manufacturers would enjoy cuts of up to 90 percent in import tariffs for foreign car parts and material used for producing the vehicles.
The parts entitled to low tariffs must not yet be produced by local producers, it said.

Maruti Increases Car Prices Because Of Increased Cost

Soon after the Auto Expo 2010 got over, it was expected that Maruti Suzuki will reduce the price of its cars to compete with the Small cars like Tata Nano and other Newly Launched Cars. On the contrary the largest consumer car company Maruti just announced price hike in its cars.
IMG_2039
The increase in the prices is as follows :
  • Maruti 800 & Maruti Alto – Price increased by Rs. 600
  • Maruti A-Start & Maruti Ritz – Price increased by Rs. 600
  • Maruti Suzuki SX4 – Price increased by Rs. 2000
  • Maruti Suzuki Wagon R – Price Increased by Rs. 3700
  • Maruti Swift Diesel – Price Increase by Rs. 6500
  • Maruti Zen Estilo – Price increase between  Rs1243  and Rs. 2486
  • Maruti Swift Dzire – Price Increase by 10,000

There has been no price hike in Swift Petrol, Maruti EECO, and other Gypsy models. Looking at this price hike it seems that the Maruti is trying to encash the popularity of its best-seller cars by increasing the price as per the popularity / demand of the car models.

Vintage cars at the 2010 Auto Expo prices & reviews

India's tenth Auto Expo started Tuesday and is already triggering traffic jams as car, truck, motorcycle and parts makers and their increasingly savvy Indian consumers converge on New Delhi's Pragati Maidan.

India's first Auto Expo was back in 1986. With few models allowed on the roads and little international interest in India, the next one wasn't held until seven years later. Today - as India has become one of the world's few remaining high-growth markets and is on the way to becoming an export hub for small, inexpensive car - this year's Auto Expo could attract more than 2,000 industry participants and close to two million visitors up through Sunday.

Two automakers got a jump on the competition by unveiling new models for India on Monday. General Motors unveiled its sporty mini model, the Chevrolet Beat, for Indian consumers with a sticker price of less than $8,500. Meanwhile, Mercedes Benz India launched its big GL350 CDI sports-utility vehicle which goes for around $150,000.
The fact that the first unveilings were one of General Motors' smallest cars and one of Mercedes' biggest shows the diversity and opportunity of India's market decades after its first Auto Expo.
No prizes for guessing which end of the spectrum is doing better. Mercedes sold around 2,250 vehicles in India last year, down 10% from a year earlier. General Motors' sales climbed to close to 70,000 units in 2009 and they expect to sell at least another 100,000 cars this year, says General Motors India managing director Karl Slym.
***
In India you have to respect the back seat drivers. That is the wisdom General Motors got from testing its new mini-car, the Chevrolet Beat, on Indian roads. The stylish little car - which looks like the offspring of a couple of candy colored race cars in from "Fast and Furious" series - was originally aimed at the trendy teen to twenty-something. But GM designers had to take into account that in India it could end up becoming the family car.

In Europe or Korea the back seat might only be used for backpacks full of text books or groceries so it is little more than a padded shelf. In India, however, you can be sure that grandma and a couple of uncles will be sitting back there on a regular basis. You can also assume everyone will end up stuck in traffic for hours at a time. The Beat has extra padding and support under the legs and at the lower lumbar to make those family outings more comfortable.
"Here in India it is more of a family car," said Edward T. Welburn, vice president of global design at GM as he nods towards the lime green Beat he helped design. "It has a front seat and a back seat."

The Ford Figo, a new nameplate and a fresh face on the Indian market, signals Ford’s intention to compete in India’s largest and most important small car market segment.
Ford Figo is the result of a significant Ford investment commitment to expand its plant near Chennai for volume production as a small-car centre of excellence regionally. “Our exciting new Ford Figo shows how serious we are about India,” Mulally said. “It reflects our commitment to compete with great products in all segments of this car market. We are confident the Ford Figo will be a product that Indian consumers really want and value.”
Ford Figo is designed and engineered to compete in India’s small car segment, which accounts for more than 70 percent of the new vehicle market. It leverages Ford’s small-car platform architecture, sharing underlying technology with the Ford Fiesta, already familiar to Indian drivers.
