mumbai monorail, monorail, monorail in mumbai,Mumbai Monorail Project | Mumbai Monorail Pictures | Monorail Test Drive

Mumbai Monorail Project takes off with a Test Drive of the Mumbai Monorail on 26th Jan 2010.
Mumbai’s first monorail test ride happened on 26th January 2010. The Test Drive of Mumbai’s Monorail was done in the presence of a number of technocrats, dignitaries and the chief minister. Malaysian born S Ponnadurai test ran the light blue rake of the monorail, which arrived in the city on January 13.
Engineers of Larsen & Toubro, along with experts from Scomi, and consultants from Louis Berger, were busy giving the 110-metre test run the final touches for the past few days. The ramp, near Aanik bus depot, stretches over 250 metres.

On 25th January, the barricaded Aanik road was full of motorists peeping out of their cars and taking pictures on their mobile phones of the first monorail, which began test runs late Monday evening. Once ready, the Mumbai Monorail 20-km track will have seven power substations. The Rs2,460-crore project will be completed by 2011.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan flagged it off at Wadala, the 108-metre test run on the 60th Republic Day.
“It is engineering marvel, only of its kind in India for the use of common man. It is going to help the people of Mumbai to commute. Around three lakh (3,00,000) people are expected to use it on a daily basis. I think it is one of the best thing that has happened to Mumbai,” Chavan said.
The 19.4-kilometers proposed route between Jacob Circle and Chembur is expected to be completed by 2011.
Monorail network is expected to give a much-needed boost to the public transport system of Mumbai, which is the most populous city of the country with and approximate population of 14 million people.
It will be an important supplement to the local trains and other road transportations.

Delhi Metro among world's top five, claim DMRC officials

Be it punctuality or efficacy of service, Delhi Metro officials claim the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) ranks among the top five metro rail systems in the world.
Despite several teething problems, most of which, officials claim, stem from a lack of awareness among Metro commuters, DMRC officials feel the mass rapid transit system has fared quite well and managed to deliver services at par with international standards.
The DMRC currently maintains a punctuality of 99.5 per cent, and headway time of just one minute for train delay, Raj Kumar, Director (Operations) said. "Metro rail systems in other countries, in contrast, consider a delay of around three to five minutes as train delay, though they too have a punctuality rate of approximately 99 per cent. The DMRC certainly ranks among the top five metro rail systems in the world." Kumar also pointed out that in the underground Metro system in London, three to four stations covering a distance of three to four km are shut down for maintenance work at any point of time. The DMRC, however, undertakes maintenance work (which usually spans four hours) only during night time and on Sundays, when the rush is lower, Kumar claimed.
In terms of manpower, the Delhi Metro will have 36 persons per km (for general operations) at the end of Phase II, among the lowest in the world. "Other countries such as Singapore have a ratio of 30 persons per km; Hong Kong has 60 persons per km. The figures show that DMRC has a lean structure, despite which we have high operational standards since we use better technology," Kumar claimed.
Officials admitted that they do face constant operational problems due to misuse by commuters. "There is a lack of awareness among commuters, which affects our operations. Lifts that are meant to be used by the handicapped and the elderly are usually crowded by others. At times young children intentionally press the emergency button to stop the escalators. We also see at least two to three cases of the automatic fare collections gate bars being broken every day, as commuters try to force their way through," Kumar said.
The DMRC has also been facing problems of track thefts. In the last year, 53 theft cases were registered, which included stealing of cables, hose pipes used for fire extinguishers and nozzles.
"These thefts severely hamper our services as we try to repair the loss," Kumar said.

New train timings, stoppages to be included in new timetable
Timings of new trains including the non-stop Duranto express, extension of train services and new stoppages will find place in the new time table of Indian Railways which comes into effect from November one.

According to Northern Railway, departure timings of about 11 trains originating from the region, including the Nizamuddin-Secunderabad and New Delhi-Bilaspur Rajdhani expresses, will be revised from November one.

The new time table which was supposed to come into effect from July one was postponed to November in view of the late presentation of Railway budget this year.

A Northern Railway spokesperson said the new time table will be available in stalls from November onwards.

The timings of all 14 Duranto class of trains announced in the budget will figure in the time table along with the revisions carried out in passenger booking schemes.

train accident, mathura train collision, mathura train accident

Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee has ordered a inquiry into Wednesday’s train accident at Mathura, in which 15 people were feared dead.

Banerjee has asked the chairman of the railway board to oversee rescue operations.
About 150 army jawans are assisting in rescue operations. Medical teams too have been rushed to the site.
Meanwhile, a compensation of rupees five lakh has been announced for families of the deceased; rupees one lakh to the seriously injured and Rs 10,000 to those with minor injuries.
The incident occurred when the New Delhi-bound Goa Express rammed into the rear of the stationary Udaipur Express also called the Mewar Express at 5.00 a.m. this morning near Mathura.
Due to the impact, the last bogie of the Udaipur Express was completely damaged as the locomotive of the Goa Express telescoped into it.
“I was in Goa Express and the driver of the train was not driving properly from the very beginning. He was constantly changing track and then he rammed the train with another stationary train that was already positioned on the tracks,” said Junaid, a passenger.
Rescue officials used welding machines and gas cutters to open the doors and the damaged shells of the bogies of the Udaipur Express and helped the trapped passengers to come out.
Some of the fortunate passengers also lent a hand in the rescue operation.
“Some passengers were sleeping on the upper berths of the train and when the accident occurred, they fell on us. We then realised something has happened. We came out and helped rescue some of the passengers,” said Deepak, another passenger.
Meanwhile, police personnel who had rushed to spot said they were not in a position to give the exact casualty figure since the rescue operations are still on.
“I am not in a position to tell you exactly how many have died,” said Sanjay Kumar, a police officer.
The injured passengers have been admitted to nearby hospitals.
