Music genius and Academy Awards winner AR Rahman turns 44. One of the most acclaimed music directors of the present time, he in a career spanning over a decade has delivered some of the most memorable music in films like Roja, Lagaan, Rang De Basanti , Guru, Taal, Bombay, Dil Se, Rangeela and the most recently Slumdog Millionaire.

For his score of Slumdog Millionaire, Rahman won the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score, the BAFTA Award for Best Film Music, and two Academy Awards for Best Original Music Score and Best Original Song.

Rahman, the "Mozart of Madras", was born in 1966 as AS Dileep Kumar, a Hindu, to RK Shekhar, a composer, arranger and conductor for Malayalam-language films. However, he later got converted into a Muslim.

Rahman began his independent career with Mani Ratnam's Roja in Tamil in 1992 after assisting the doyen of Tamil film music Illaiyaraja for nearly a decade. He was awarded the Rajat Kamal award for Best Music Director at the National Film Awards for the film, the first time ever by a first-time film composer and since then he never looked back.

The film was also listed in TIME's "Top 10 Movie Soundtracks of All Time". Rahman went on to win the national award three more times (for his scores for Minsaara Kanavu in 1997, Lagaan in 2002 and Kannathil Muthamittal, the most ever by any composer. The music director is known for his versatility in classical, folk, jazz, reggae, soft rock and other styles in his pieces. Rahman's debut Hindi film was Rangeela. He has also been awarded the Padam Shri for his outstanding contribution to music.

Some of his recent work includes Jodhaa Akbar, Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, Yuvraaj, Delhi-6 and Ghajini. Rahman scored the Mandarin language picture Warriors of Heaven and Earth in 2003 after researching and utilizing Chinese and Japanese classical music, and co-scored the Shekhar Kapoor helmed Elizabeth: The Golden Age in 2007.

Known for keeping his personal life away from the media glare, Rahman is married to Saira and has three children - Khatija, Rahima and Amin. Rahman attached and opened a developed extension studio to his Panchathan Record Inn in 2005, called AM Studios in Kodambakkam, Chennai - considered to be the most developed, equipped and high tech studio in Asia.

In 2006, he launched his own music label, KM Music. After the success of Slumdog Millionaire, Rahman has become selective and is working on a few Bollywood projects; his last Hindi release was 'Blue'. After winning couple of academy awards with Slumdog Millionaire, the "Mozart of Madras" has been approached with many Hollywood offers. He recently made his first foray into composing music for an American film with Universal Pictures' forthcoming romantic comedy, Couples Retreat.

Rahman will also score music for more Hollywood films including Danny Boyle’s tentatively titled 127 Hours and Ashok Amritraj’s Street Dancing. The master composer’s next big Bollywood venture is with his 'Roja' director Mani Ratnam in 'Raavan.

India's tenth Auto Expo started Tuesday and is already triggering traffic jams as car, truck, motorcycle and parts makers and their increasingly savvy Indian consumers converge on New Delhi's Pragati Maidan.

India's first Auto Expo was back in 1986. With few models allowed on the roads and little international interest in India, the next one wasn't held until seven years later. Today - as India has become one of the world's few remaining high-growth markets and is on the way to becoming an export hub for small, inexpensive car - this year's Auto Expo could attract more than 2,000 industry participants and close to two million visitors up through Sunday.

Two automakers got a jump on the competition by unveiling new models for India on Monday. General Motors unveiled its sporty mini model, the Chevrolet Beat, for Indian consumers with a sticker price of less than $8,500. Meanwhile, Mercedes Benz India launched its big GL350 CDI sports-utility vehicle which goes for around $150,000.

The fact that the first unveilings were one of General Motors' smallest cars and one of Mercedes' biggest shows the diversity and opportunity of India's market decades after its first Auto Expo.

No prizes for guessing which end of the spectrum is doing better. Mercedes sold around 2,250 vehicles in India last year, down 10% from a year earlier. General Motors' sales climbed to close to 70,000 units in 2009 and they expect to sell at least another 100,000 cars this year, says General Motors India managing director Karl Slym.

In India you have to respect the back seat drivers. That is the wisdom General Motors got from testing its new mini-car, the Chevrolet Beat, on Indian roads. The stylish little car - which looks like the offspring of a couple of candy colored race cars in from "Fast and Furious" series - was originally aimed at the trendy teen to twenty-something. But GM designers had to take into account that in India it could end up becoming the family car.

In Europe or Korea the back seat might only be used for backpacks full of text books or groceries so it is little more than a padded shelf. In India, however, you can be sure that grandma and a couple of uncles will be sitting back there on a regular basis. You can also assume everyone will end up stuck in traffic for hours at a time. The Beat has extra padding and support under the legs and at the lower lumbar to make those family outings more comfortable.

"Here in India it is more of a family car," said Edward T. Welburn, vice president of global design at GM as he nods towards the lime green Beat he helped design. "It has a front seat and a back seat."

This will be manufactured in India, & its launching would be planned 1 in 2011 in Europe, even prior to Prima’s arrival TATA would be selling NANO already.
