Lenovo launch vernacular computing initiative 'Matrubhasha'
Lenovo India today announced the launch of ''Matrubhasha', a vernacular computing initiative in 12 Indian languages that empowers school children to gain computer proficiency through their mother tongue without depending on English.
The company would donate 150 H series desktops, pre-installed with Kannada computing software developed by LooKeys to government schools libraries in and around the city which were run by Akshara Foundation.
Lenovo India Vice President Ramaprasad Lakshminarayanan said the project was a grassroot level initiative to help children gain computer literacy without depending on English as a medium. ''We hope this advantage exposes the children to opportunities that would have otherwise been restricted to English-aware children only,'' he said.
He said the LooKeys-enabled Lenovo PCs offer computing programmes in 12 Indian languages-- Hindi, English, Bengali, Urdu, Kannada, Tamil, Gujarati, Marathi, Telugu, Malayalam, Konkani and Punjabi.
The children could also use applications like chat, word processing, PowerPoint, e-mails and browse the Web by using the language of their choice as the medium.
